Session 1: War in Heaven — The Origin of Evil (Revelation 12:7-9; Ezekiel 28:12-17; Isaiah 14:12-15)

Contrary to popular ideas of heaven as a perfect, peaceful place, Scripture reveals a decisive conflict. This battle was not a physical fight with swords or lightsabers but a battle of truth—over the nature of God, His character, and His government. The Greek word “polymos” used here implies a propagandistic war, a clash of ideas about who deserves to rule.
2. Before his fall, Satan was known as Lucifer, meaning “bearer of light,” described in Ezekiel 28 as a perfect and beautiful covering angel adorned with precious stones. However, pride corrupted his heart. His desire shifted from being a guardian of God’s throne to wanting to ascend above God and be like the Most High. “The Lord God commanded the man, ‘You may freely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall die.'” (Genesis 2:16-17)

1. The conflict in heaven moved down to earth, beginning in the Garden of Eden. God gave Adam freedom to eat from every tree except one, establishing a test of loyalty and obedience. This was not to restrict Adam’s happiness but to allow him to trust God’s wisdom and authority. The tree of the knowledge of good and evil symbolized the boundary of God’s government and moral order.
2. Satan, in the form of a serpent, introduced doubt by questioning God’s command: “Did God really say…?” This subtle tactic planted uncertainty in Eve’s mind, undermining her trust in God’s word. Satan then directly contradicted God’s warning by assuring her she would not die, tempting her with the promise of becoming like God, knowing good and evil. This progression from doubt to denial is the essence of temptation.
3. Eve succumbed to this deception, choosing to place self on the throne of her heart rather than God. Adam joined her in this decision. This event, known as the Fall, brought sin, death, and suffering into the world. As Romans 5:12 explains, sin entered through one man, and death followed as its consequence, spreading to all humanity.

1. The battle between good and evil continues on earth, but God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to be the promised Redeemer. From the earliest days after the Fall, God established a sacrificial system and a lineage through which the Messiah would come, fulfilling numerous prophecies. Jesus came not just to teach but to destroy the works of the devil by setting captives free and offering salvation.
2. The sermon highlights how Satan tried to stop Jesus’ mission from the beginning—through Herod’s attempt to kill the baby Messiah and through constant opposition during His ministry.
