Session 1: The War in Heaven and the Church in the Wilderness (Revelation 12:7-17)

“And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought with the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought, but they did not prevail, nor was a place found for them in heaven any longer. So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world…” (Revelation 12:7-9, NKJV)

💭 Teaching Summary:

Before the creation of this world, a cosmic war began over truth and the character of God. This war is not only physical but ideological, centered on God’s throne founded on truth and righteousness. The conflict is ongoing, reaching a climax in the last days as Satan continues to wage war against the true Church, the faithful who keep God’s commandments and hold the testimony of Jesus.
Between the first war in heaven and the final war at the end of time, there was a crucial period known as the time of the Church in the wilderness. This period represents a faithful remnant living in persecution and isolation, preserving the purity of the gospel through hardship and suffering.
The Waldenses represent this church in the wilderness. They sought refuge in the remote Alpine valleys, using the difficult terrain as a fortress to protect their faith from the corrupting influences of the papacy and false doctrines creeping into the visible church.
Their motto, Lux lucet in tenebris, meaning “The light shines in the darkness,” perfectly captures their mission. They were a beacon of truth in a dark age, committed to preserving and sharing the gospel despite great opposition.

The Waldenses took refuge in the rugged Alpine valleys north of Italy, a place extremely difficult to access and survive in. These valleys offered natural protection from armies and oppression, symbolizing God’s provision for His faithful people during times of severe trial.
This mountainous region was not an easy place to live. The Waldenses endured harsh winters, demanding terrain, and isolation, yet they chose this hardship over compromise. Their willingness to forsake comfort and economic opportunity for faithfulness is a powerful testimony of commitment to God’s truth.
Their name “Waldenses” likely comes from various origins, including “inhabitants of the valleys” and connections to Peter Waldo, a key figure in their history. Regardless of name origin, the Waldenses became synonymous with those who preserved the apostolic faith in the wilderness.
Their motto, “The light shines in the darkness,” was more than a slogan—it was a lived reality. Despite persecution and suffering, their faith illuminated Europe, preserving the gospel where it might have otherwise been lost.

💭 Teaching Summary:

Starting in the 2nd and 3rd centuries, pagan practices and false doctrines began infiltrating the early Christian church. This compromise led to a dilution of apostolic truth, including doctrines about the nature of Christ, salvation, and worship practices.
Key false teachings included the idea that laypeople could not understand Scripture, which placed undue authority in the clergy and silenced the common believer. This was a dangerous step away from the priesthood of all believers and the clear teaching of the Bible.
The doctrine of the Mass, which taught that the bread and wine literally become the body and blood of Christ, was introduced as a sacrificial priesthood replacing Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice. This opened the door to superstition and error.
The belief that salvation could be earned by works as well as faith led to religious tyranny. This justified coercion and persecution of dissenters, undermining liberty of conscience and the true gospel of grace.
The merging of church and state power led to the doctrine of the divine right of kings and passive obedience, which protected corrupt leaders and priests from accountability and suppressed opposition through force and fear.
