Session 1: The Context of Calvary (John 19:1-5)

“Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged. And the soldiers wove a crown of thorns and put it on his head and dressed him in a purple robe. And they kept coming up to him saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’ and striking him in the face. 1. The immediate context of Jesus’ crucifixion reveals the brutal injustice He endured. Jesus was arrested, illegally tried through the night by the Sanhedrin, and subjected to severe physical abuse. Pilate ordered a harsh scourging that nearly brought Jesus to death. The soldiers mocked Him with a crown of thorns and a royal purple robe, ridiculing His claim to kingship. This was not just physical suffering but emotional and spiritual agony, as He was abandoned by friends and denied by His closest disciple, Peter. The portrayal shows the depth of His sacrifice and the reality of His humanity.
2. Pilate’s declaration, “Behold the man,” exposes Jesus as the innocent sufferer. Despite the brutal treatment, Jesus stood before the people as a man fully human—wounded, weary, and despised. 1. Jesus is Emmanuel, “God with us.” He did not remain distant from human pain but entered fully into it. His life and death reveal God’s character of compassion and solidarity. Jesus healed the sick, raised the dead, and touched the untouchable, showing us a God who cares intimately for our suffering. This truth comforts those hurting today, reminding us that God is not far off but near.

Session 3: The Purpose of Christ’s Coming (Genesis 3:15; John 14:9; Isaiah 53)

Teaching Summary 💭

1. Jesus came to fulfill the promise made in the Garden of Eden, to defeat Satan and restore humanity. From the very beginning, God revealed a plan of redemption through the offspring of the woman who would crush the serpent’s head. Christ’s coming was the hinge of history because it was the turning point in the cosmic battle between good and evil.
2. Jesus came to reveal the true character of God. Philip’s request, “Show us the Father,” was answered in Jesus’ life and ministry. Seeing Jesus is seeing God’s love, mercy, and justice in action. His healing miracles, compassion for the marginalized, and teachings about God’s kingdom provide a clear image of who God is and what He desires for us.
3. The suffering servant motif in Isaiah shows that Jesus came not only to defeat sin but also to bear the pain and punishment for humanity’s sins. He voluntarily accepted suffering and death to establish justice and bring salvation not only to the Jews but also to the Gentiles. His example of perfect obedience invites us to follow His way.
4. Jesus also came to heal the broken and weak, both physically and spiritually. His compassionate ministry touched lepers, the sick, the dead, and the socially rejected. He is the good shepherd who seeks out every lost lamb, fighting for each one’s restoration. This personal care reveals the heart of God for each individual.

1. The death of Christ was a saving death, designed to destroy the works of the devil and take away sin. Jesus did not come to condemn but to save, seeking and rescuing the lost. His death on the cross was the ultimate expression of God’s love, reaching out to sinners in their brokenness and offering healing and forgiveness.
2. Jesus’ death was substitutionary—He died in our place. The Bible clearly teaches that He bore our sins in His body and took upon Himself the curse meant for us. This vicarious sacrifice means that salvation is not based on our merit but on His grace and sacrifice, freely given to all who believe.
3. The atoning death of Christ brings reconciliation between God and humanity. Our sin alienates us from God, but through Jesus’ death, we can be restored to a right relationship. This reconciliation is the foundation of eternal life, peace, and hope for believers.
4. Forgiveness is complete and lasting. God promises to remember our sins no more, removing them as far as the east is from the west. This means that when we confess and accept Christ’s sacrifice, our past is wiped clean, and we receive the gift of new life.

1. Jesus asked His disciples—and asks us—the vital question: “Who do you say that I am?” This question is the hinge on which our eternal destiny turns. Our answer determines whether we receive eternal life or eternal separation from God. It is not enough to know about Jesus; we must personally acknowledge Him as our Savior and Lord.
2. Every significant moment in our lives is measured by the life and death of Christ. Our calendars, celebrations, and milestones depend upon the historical reality of Jesus. Whether we accept it or not, His life is the foundation of history and our personal stories.
3. Recognizing Jesus as Emmanuel, the Lamb of God, and King of kings invites us into a relationship of faith, trust, and obedience. This means surrendering our lives to Him, following His example, and eagerly awaiting His second coming. The hope of resurrection and eternal joy is rooted in this personal acceptance.
