Exposing the Lie: A Deep Dive into the Second Angel’s Message

“Fallen, fallen is Babylon the Great.”

In our journey through the Three Angels’ Messages of Revelation 14, we find a powerful and sobering progression. If the First Angel’s Message reveals God as our Creator and Redeemer, then the Second Angel’s Message exposes Satan for who he truly is: a liar, a deceiver, and a killer.

It is the shortest of the three messages, but it is packed with historical context, prophetic urgency, and a final appeal of mercy. Let’s open the Word and look at Revelation 14:8:

“Then another angel, a second, followed, saying, ‘Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great, who has made all nations drink the wine of the passion of her sexual immorality.’” (ESV)

To understand this message, we must travel back to the Old Testament, understand the symbol of Babylon, and then see its terrifying fulfillment in the end times.

1. Babylon in the Old Testament: The Origin of Rebellion

The story of Babylon begins shortly after the flood with a man named Nimrod.

“Cush fathered Nimrod; he was the first on earth to be a mighty man. He was a mighty hunter before the Lord… The beginning of his kingdom was Babel (Babylon)…” (Genesis 10:8-10)

Nimrod built the Tower of Babel. The name “Babel” (or Bab-ilu) means “The Gate of God.” But it wasn’t a gate to reach God; it was a monument to human pride. It was the world’s first centralized system of rebellion, declaring that humanity was sovereign and no longer accountable to the God of Heaven.

With this rebellion came the first lie: The Immortality of the Soul. Satan’s original deception in Eden—“You shall not surely die”—became the foundation of all pagan religion.

  • In Paganism: It manifests as ancestor worship and spiritism.

  • In Hinduism/Buddhism: It manifests as reincarnation (endless cycles of life).

  • In Catholicism/Islam: It manifests as an eternally burning hell or purgatory.

The lie is simple and devastating: If you don’t really die, you don’t really need a Savior. This is the “wine” of false doctrine that Babylon intoxicates the world with.

Later, the prophet Isaiah directly connects the King of Babylon to Lucifer himself (Isaiah 14:4). The phrase “Fallen, fallen” isn’t new to Revelation; it echoes through the prophets.

  • Isaiah 21:9: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon; and all the carved images of her gods he has shattered to the ground.”

  • Jeremiah 51:6: “Flee from the midst of Babylon; let every one save his life!”

In the Old Testament, Babylon was a real empire—a union of church and state that opposed God, promoted demon worship, and persecuted His people. God’s command to His people living there was always the same: “Flee.”

2. Babylon in the New Testament: The Apostate Church

When we jump to the New Testament book of Revelation, Babylon transforms from a literal city into a universal religious system. To understand the “woman” of Revelation 17, we have to look at three beasts mentioned in prophecy:

  1. The Dragon (Revelation 12): This is Satan himself, who persecutes the people of God.

  2. The Beast from the Sea (Revelation 13): This is the papacy, a religious power that arose after the pagan Roman empire fell.

  3. The Scarlet Beast & The Woman (Revelation 17): This represents the final form of apostasy. The woman is described as a harlot, signifying a fallen church. She is dressed in purple and scarlet, holds a golden cup full of abominations, and sits on many waters (meaning she has influence over “peoples, multitudes, nations, and languages”).

Most importantly, we are told: “I saw the woman, drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus” (Revelation 17:6).

This is a persecuting power. It is a global religious system that, in union with the state, seeks to compel worship and silence dissent. It is the same spirit that drove the Inquisition, the St. Bartholomew’s Day Massacre, and the persecution of the Waldenses.

3. The “Wine” of Her Fornication: What Are the False Doctrines?

The message states that Babylon makes the nations drink the “wine of the wrath of her fornication.” This wine represents false doctrines that corrupt the truth of the Gospel. These teachings, which entered the church over the centuries, replace the pure word of God with human tradition.

Some of these false teachings include:

  • The Mass replacing Christ’s once-for-all sacrifice.

  • Confession to a human priest rather than directly to God.

  • Penance instead of a penitent heart (the sale of indulgences).

  • The exaltation of Mary as an intercessor.

  • The doctrine of Purgatory.

  • The claim that the Church has authority over Scripture.

  • The change of the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday.

The Great Controversy (p. 595) reminds us of our only safeguard: “God will have a people upon the earth to maintain the Bible, and the Bible only, as the standard of all doctrines and the basis of all reforms.”

4. God’s Final Appeal: “Come Out of Her, My People”

Despite the darkness, God is a God of mercy. Before the final plagues fall, before the complete destruction of this corrupt system, God sends one last love call.

“Then I heard another voice from heaven saying, ‘Come out of her, my people, lest you take part in her sins, lest you share in her plagues.’” (Revelation 18:4)

Notice three key things about this appeal:

  1. God still has people there. Even in the most corrupt systems, God sees hearts that are loyal to Him. He calls them by name.

  2. It is a personal decision. We cannot be “sort of” in Babylon. We are called to separate from false worship, from the occult influences of society, and from the persecution of God’s children.

  3. Judgment is certain. “Fallen, fallen” is repeated twice. It is a done deal. The persecutors, the child-traffickers (like the spirit of Epstein), and those who shed the blood of the saints will face the justice of a righteous God.

Conclusion: The Choice is Yours

The First Angel reveals God. The Second Angel exposes Satan. The Third Angel will call us to make a choice. But even in this message, the choice is clear.

Will you drink the wine of Babylon—the lies of spiritualism, the pride of humanism, and the persecution of the truth?
Or will you heed the call to “Come out”?

God is looking for a peculiar people, a prophetic people, whose eyes are fixed on Jesus. He is our Sin-bearing Savior, our Guilt-forgiving Savior, and our Soon-coming King.

Let us fix our eyes on Him, saturate our minds with His Word, and stand firm in earth’s darkest hour. The reward is worth it. Amen.
