Micheal Stands Up Part 1 | Dr. Conrad Vine

Study Guide: Daniel’s Parallel Prophecies and Michael’s Standing Up

Introduction

This study guide is based on a presentation exploring Daniel’s prophetic timelines, the identity of Michael, and the significance of the pre-advent judgment. The focus text is Daniel 12:1, which speaks of Michael standing up and God’s people being delivered.

Part 1: Daniel’s Parallel Prophecies

Overview of the Four Major Prophetic Outlines

Daniel 2 – The Statue

  • Head of gold = Babylon

  • Chest/arms of silver = Medo-Persia

  • Thighs of brass = Greece

  • Legs of iron = Rome (pagan and imperial phases)

  • Feet of iron and clay = Divided Europe

  • Stone striking the statue = Second Coming of Christ

Daniel 7 – Four Beasts

  • Winged lion = Babylon

  • Bear raised on one side with three ribs = Medo-Persia

  • Four-headed leopard with wings = Greece

  • Indescribable beast with 10 horns = Rome (pagan and papal)

  • Little horn = Papal Rome

  • Heavenly judgment = Pre-advent judgment

  • Second coming = End of earthly kingdoms

Daniel 8 – Ram and Goat

  • Ram with two horns = Medo-Persia

  • Goat with large horn = Greece

  • Four horns = Division of Greek Empire

  • Little horn (vertical conquest) = Papal Rome

  • 2,300 days = Sanctuary cleansing/judgment

Key Pattern: All prophecies follow the same structure:

  1. Earthly powers described

  2. God’s supernatural intervention follows

  3. Hope for God’s people despite earthly oppression

Part 2: Daniel 10-12 – The Final Vision Unit

Historical Context

  • Daniel 10-12 form a single prophetic unit

  • Given in the time of Cyrus the Great

  • Prophecy begins with Persian kings

Daniel 11 – Kings Identified

Prophecy Historical Fulfillment
Three more kings in Persia Cambyses II, Smerdis, Darius I (521-485 BC)
Fourth king, richer than all Xerxes the Great (Ahasuerus, Esther’s husband)
Warrior king Alexander the Great
Kingdom divided into four Greece divided among Cassander, Lysimachus, Seleucus, Ptolemy

End-Time Focus:

  • Verses 32-39 = Papal power (blasphemous, self-exalting, persecuting saints)

  • Verses 40-45 = Final assault on God’s people (mark of the beast, final crisis)

  • Verse 40 introduces “the time of the end”

Part 3: Who Is Michael?

Identifying Michael from Scripture

1. Daniel 10:4-9

  • Daniel sees a glorious being

  • Five physiological responses:

    • Strength left him

    • Complexion grew deathly pale

    • Retained no strength

    • Fell into a trance

    • Fell face to the ground

2. Ezekiel 1:26-28

  • Vision of God on His throne

  • Ezekiel “fell on his face” (same response as Daniel)

  • Description uses “likeness” and “appearance” (approximations)

3. Revelation 1:13-18

  • John’s vision of Jesus

  • Fell at His feet “as though dead”

  • Same response pattern as Daniel and Ezekiel

4. Revelation 12:7

  • “Michael and his angels fought against the dragon”

  • Michael = Commander of heavenly armies

5. Joshua 5:13-15

  • Commander of the Lord’s armies appears to Joshua

  • Commands him to remove sandals (holy ground)

  • Same command as given to Moses at the burning bush

6. Jude 9

  • Michael contended with Satan over Moses’ body

  • Resurrected Moses and took him to heaven

Conclusion: Michael is Jesus Christ

  • Worthy of worship (as God)

  • Commander of heavenly armies

  • Fights against Satan’s forces (Daniel 10:13, 21)

  • Authority to raise the dead

  • Victorious over Satan

Part 4: When Does Michael Stand Up?

The Phrase “Time of the End”

  • Appears only in Daniel (not in Revelation, not elsewhere in Old Testament)

  • Six occurrences:

    • Daniel 8:17 – “At the time of the end shall be the vision”

    • Daniel 8:19 – “At the time of the end it shall be”

    • Daniel 11:35 – “Even to the time of the end”

    • Daniel 11:40 – “At/in the time of the end”

    • Daniel 12:4 – “Even to the time of the end”

    • Daniel 12:9 – “Till the time of the end”

Important Translation Note:

  • Hebrew preposition “B” can mean EITHER “in” OR “at”

  • “At” = precise moment

  • “In” = period of time

The Time, Times, and Half a Time

  • Daniel 12:7: “Time, times, and half a time” (3½ times/years)

  • Year-Day Principle: 1 prophetic day = 1 literal year

  • 3½ years × 360 days = 1,260 days = 1,260 years

  • 538 AD – 1798 AD = Papal supremacy in Europe

  • 1798: Napoleon’s General Berthier took Pope Pius VI captive

Three Events Preceding Michael’s Standing Up:

  1. End of papal supremacy in Europe (1798 AD)

  2. Pre-advent judgment (taking place in heaven)

  3. God’s judgment on the papacy (Daniel 11:45: “He shall come to his end”)

Part 5: The Certainty of Judgment

Key Texts

Scripture Teaching
Acts 17:31 God has appointed a day of judgment; assurance = resurrection of Christ
Romans 1:4 Resurrection demonstrates Christ’s power (dunamis/dynamite)
Acts 24:25 Judgment was still future in Paul’s day (Paul reasoned with Felix)
Romans 14:10-12 “We shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ”
Romans 2:16 God judges “the secrets of men” – not just actions but thoughts/motives
Revelation 22:12 Results of judgment implemented at Christ’s return

Three Important Distinctions:

  1. Crisis (Greek) = Judgment

  2. Krimma (Greek) = Condemnation (we get “criminal”)

  3. Romans 8:1 – “There is therefore now NO condemnation (krimma) to those who are in Christ Jesus”

Good News: The pre-advent judgment vindicates God’s people before the watching universe.

Summary Chart: Daniel’s Parallel Prophecies

Element Daniel 2 Daniel 7 Daniel 8
Earthly Powers Statue (4 metals + feet) 4 beasts + little horn Ram + goat + little horn
Heavenly Intervention Stone strikes statue Pre-advent judgment 2,300 days – sanctuary cleansed
Final Outcome Second coming Second coming Second coming

Reflection Questions

  1. Why is it significant that all three major prophetic chapters follow the same pattern?

  2. What evidence from Scripture shows Michael is not just an angel but Jesus Christ Himself?

  3. How does the certainty of judgment affect how we live today?

  4. Why is the pre-advent judgment “good news” for those in Christ Jesus?

  5. How does understanding the “time of the end” help us interpret current events?

Key Terms to Know

Term Definition
Pre-advent judgment Heavenly judgment taking place before Christ returns
Investitive judgment Alternative term for pre-advent judgment
Theophany Visible appearance of God to a person
Palemic A battle about ideas/truth (from Greek “polemos” = war)
Time, times, half a time 1,260 prophetic years (538-1798 AD)
Year-Day Principle One prophetic day equals one literal year

Practical Application

  1. Study the Word – When asked to teach/preach, see it as an invitation to dive deeper into Scripture

  2. Trust God’s Intervention – Though earthly powers oppress, God always has the final word

  3. Live in Light of Judgment – Knowing God judges our secrets should motivate us to pursue holiness and forgiveness

  4. Find Security in Christ – No condemnation for those in Christ Jesus; we need not fear the judgment
