Stepping Out in Faith: Lessons from Joshua 1

By Dr. Conrad Vine

Have you ever faced a moment when God called you to step into the unknown? Maybe it was a new job, a move to a different city, or a ministry opportunity that felt overwhelming. I recently listened to a powerful message from Dr. Conrad Vine, who shared how Joshua 1 became his lifeline when he stepped into a foreign land—both literally and spiritually. His testimony reminded me that God’s promises are just as real for us today as they were for Joshua thousands of years ago.

The Call to Step Out in Faith

In 1997, Dr. Vine was preparing to travel to Azerbaijan—a country with a different language, unfamiliar customs, and even political tensions. Fear crept in: Would he make friends? Would he return safely? But on the morning of his flight, he read Joshua 1, and God spoke directly to his heart.

“Moses My servant is dead. Now therefore, arise, go over this Jordan…” (Joshua 1:2)

Just as Joshua was called to lead Israel into the Promised Land, God was calling Dr. Vine (and often calls us) to step into the unknown. The command was clear: “Step out in faith.” The promise? “I will bless you.”

Reflection:

  • What is God calling you to step into today?

  • Are you hesitating because of fear, or are you trusting His promises?

The Power of Meditating on God’s Word

God didn’t just tell Joshua to move forward—He told him how to stay grounded:

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night… then you will have good success.” (Joshua 1:8)

Dr. Vine explained that the Hebrew word for “meditate” (hagah) means to chew on something, like turning over a piece of gum to release fresh flavor. Similarly, when we meditate on Scripture throughout the day—not just in a quick morning devotional—God gives us fresh insight and guidance.

Practical Tip:

  • Write down a verse and reflect on it during breaks, commutes, or quiet moments.

  • Ask: “God, what are You saying to me through this today?”

The Command to Be Courageous

Fear is natural when facing the unknown. Joshua was about to lead Israel into battles against giants and fortified cities. But God’s reassurance was unwavering:

“Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid… for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9)

Dr. Vine faced language barriers, cultural differences, and even danger—yet he held onto this promise. And after 30 years of ministry around the world, he could say with confidence: “Not one of God’s promises has failed.”

Challenge:

  • What fears are holding you back?

  • How can you remind yourself that God is with you?

A Personal Covenant with God

For Dr. Vine, Joshua 1 became his lifelong covenant with God:

  1. Step out in faith → “I will bless you.”

  2. Meditate on His Word → “I will guide you.”

  3. Be strong and courageous → “I will be with you.”

These same promises are for us today. Whether you’re facing a new challenge, a season of uncertainty, or a call to boldness, God’s Word remains true.

Final Thought

Joshua’s story didn’t end at the edge of the Jordan—it was just the beginning of God’s faithfulness in action. The same is true for you.

Will you step out in faith today?

“Walk with the Lord and see what He can do for you.” —Dr. Conrad Vine

Discussion Questions (for readers to engage in the comments):

  1. What “Jordan River” (unknown challenge) are you facing right now?

  2. How has meditating on Scripture helped you in difficult times?

  3. Which of the three promises (blessing, guidance, presence) do you need most today?
