Session 1: The Pure in Heart – Seeing God (Matthew 5:8; Psalm 24:3-6)

The Beatitude “pure in heart” draws from Psalm 24, which describes those who may ascend the hill of the Lord and stand in His holy place as those with clean hands and pure hearts who do not lift up their souls to falsehood or swear deceitfully. The purity Jesus speaks of is not merely external ritual cleanliness, as emphasized by the rabbis of His day, but an inward undividedness before God. The heart includes thoughts, emotions, and will, indicating a transparency and sincerity that mirrors God’s character in relationships with others.
Jesus links the heart and the eyes throughout the Sermon on the Mount, showing how what we fix our eyes upon influences our inner life and motives. For example, Matthew 6:22-23 describes the eye as the lamp of the body, and Matthew 5:28 connects lustful looks to adultery in the heart. Thus, inner purity involves guarding what we allow to enter our minds and what we desire, shaping the direction of our lives.

Historically, the Pax Romana—peace through conquest and control—stood in stark contrast to Jesus’ peace, which is rooted in love and humility rather than force. Jesus’ peace offers healing and restoration that worldly peace cannot provide.
Peacemaking requires active effort and often personal sacrifice. Jesus outlines a process for resolving conflict in Matthew 18, emphasizing private reconciliation, involving witnesses, and ultimately bringing matters before the church community to restore harmony.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for the beautiful teachings of Jesus that guide us toward pure hearts and peacemaking. We acknowledge the condition of our hearts—sometimes busy, lustful, bitter, or frozen—and we ask You to cleanse us with Your living water. Help us to seek Your kingdom first, to forgive and reconcile, and to follow the Prince of Peace in humility and love.
