Digital Dungeon 2: The Rise of Smart Cities and the Choice Before Us

Opening Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the Sabbath hours, a time to step aside from work and worry. We invite Your Holy Spirit to guide us tonight. In these troubled times, Your prophetic voice is our flashlight. We pray for wisdom and understanding of the times in which we live. Speak through us tonight. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Introduction: The World We Live In

We are entering a time of trouble unlike any before. As pastors, part of our role is to prepare people for what lies ahead. This evening, we continue with “Digital Dungeon 2,” building on this morning’s message about the digital controls emerging in our world.

The concept of “smart cities” and “15-minute cities” began gaining traction during the pandemic. Originating from an old Soviet idea designed to restrict freedom—not facilitate it—these urban models are now being rolled out globally. We saw during COVID how governments could lock people down in their homes. Now, integrated with digital IDs and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs), smart cities are becoming the infrastructure for a new level of control.

The Goals of Smart Cities

At recent global expos, cities and tech corporations promote smart cities with noble goals:

  1. Equitable Access: Dynamically adjusting public transport and utilities.

  2. Citizen Participation: Online platforms for voting on local initiatives.

  3. Inclusive Environments: Designing infrastructure for safety of vulnerable groups.

  4. Combating Disinformation: Rapid information systems for emergencies.

  5. Optimized Living: Using technology to minimize traffic, pollution, and maximize efficiency.

It all sounds beneficial. But the underlying mechanism is 24/7 data collection. The aggregate effect turns a “smart” city into a surveillance city.

Smart City Projects in Action

  • Mobility & Transport: AI-controlled traffic lights, connected public transport with live updates, autonomous vehicles, and “digital twin” cities for simulation.

  • Energy & Environment: Smart grids that learn your daily patterns, intelligent waste and water management, real-time air quality monitoring.

  • Public Safety: CCTV with AI to detect anomalies, disaster early-warning systems, smart street lighting.

  • Citizen Services: Digital portals for all government services, AI chatbots, open data platforms.

  • Health & Well-being: Telemedicine, health wearables for the elderly, environmental tracking apps.

Each innovation offers convenience but erodes privacy, feeding data into centralized systems.

The Dangers: A Digital Dungeon

The smart city skeleton can easily become the framework of a surveillance state:

  • Continuous Tracking: Facial recognition cameras and drones can track your every movement, linked to your digital ID.

  • Geo-Fencing & Travel Restrictions: Location data can enforce “off-limits” zones, disabling your transport or payments if you cross a virtual line—as seen with China’s health apps.

  • Purchasing Power Compliance: Programmable digital currencies mean governments can control what you buy, where, and how much you can save—effectively a social credit system.

  • Censorship & Speech Monitoring: With digital IDs linked to internet access, every online post is tied to a verified identity, chilling free speech.

  • Conditional Access: Your access to healthcare, employment, and even energy (via smart meters) can be tied to compliance with state mandates.

  • Total Erosion of Privacy: Every smart device becomes a data point for central authorities. Living under constant surveillance changes behavior, stifles dissent, and impacts mental health.

The Choices We Must Make

We are moving toward a world of tighter digital controls. Here are practical steps to retain independence and resilience:

  1. Consider Relocation: Urban areas are the first targets for smart infrastructure. Rural or remote areas may offer more freedom and self-sufficiency.

  2. Grow Your Own Food: Move toward self-reliance, as Ellen White advised for the time of “no buy, no sell.”

  3. Maintain Digital Boundaries: Use separate accounts and devices, avoid unnecessary app permissions, and be wary of biometric logins.

  4. Strengthen Your Spiritual Connection: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7). Trust in God as your provider.

  5. Prepare for Travel Constraints: Cherish the ability to travel now. Keep cash, maps, and essentials, as digital systems can fail.

  6. Optimize Your Health: Following health principles reduces reliance on a system that could make care conditional on compliance.

  7. Build Trusted Community Networks: Form prayer groups, Bible studies, or house churches. In crisis, your local spiritual family will be vital.

  8. Practice Digital Detox: Regularly disconnect to reclaim your humanity and reduce dependency on the digital dopamine cycle.

  9. Develop Practical Skills & Barter Networks: Learn to fix, build, and grow. In a collapsed or controlled economy, practical skills and trade networks are invaluable.

  10. Diversify Assets: Hold some resources that cannot be frozen or controlled by a digital system.

The Core Dilemmas

  • Where is your red line? At what point will you refuse a digital ID or mandate? Acceptance leads to normalization.

  • Can you opt out later? Once the government has your detailed profile, simply deleting an app won’t erase their data.

  • How far will you go for convenience or safety? The pursuit of comfort can be detrimental to both spiritual and physical health.

Conclusion: The Ultimate Issue is Worship

Digital IDs, smart cities, and CBDCs are building the infrastructure for the final crisis—the enforcement of the mark of the beast (Revelation 13:16-17). This digital dungeon will be used for the global coercion of conscience.

The final conflict is over worship (Revelation 14:6-12). Will we worship the Creator who gave us His Sabbath, or bow to the beast’s system? The choice is between God’s commandments and man’s mandates.

We are not preparing out of fear, but to be effective soldiers for Christ for as long as possible. We want to be positioned to share the everlasting gospel and invite people to receive the seal of God. This might mean simplifying our lives, relocating, or re-prioritizing—not to save ourselves, but to be a light in the darkness for others.

Eternal life is worth it. Configure your life—whatever your age or stage—to shine brightly for Jesus in the time we have left.

Closing Prayer:
Heavenly Father, we see the signs. Give us wisdom to live intentionally, to be lights on a hill, and to hold fast to You as our Provider. May our lives be configured for the battle for souls. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
