Session 1: Understanding Sexual Brokenness and Its Impact (Genesis 1-3; Matthew 5:27-30)

Opening Scripture: “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” (Matthew 5:27-28)

Teaching Summary:

1. Sexuality was created by God as a beautiful reflection of His image and love. From the very beginning in Genesis, male and female were designed to complement each other and mirror God’s goodness. Marriage and the Sabbath are gifts meant to symbolize this divine harmony and bonding. However, since the fall of humanity in Genesis 3, Satan has specifically targeted these gifts, seeking to destroy the image of God in us, especially through attacks on human sexuality and marriage.
2. Sexual brokenness affects everyone differently but is always a consequence of sin’s impact on fallen humanity. It may arise from trauma, such as childhood sexual abuse, or from cultural distortions and personal choices that deviate from God’s original design. Sexual sin often begins in the heart with lust and objectification, as Jesus taught, and can lead to compulsive behaviors or addictions that harm the individual, their family, and the church community.
3. The consequences of sexual brokenness are profound, affecting not only relationships and marriages but also causing neurological changes in the brain. Pornography, for example, physically rewires the brain in ways comparable to substance addiction, which explains the difficulty many face in breaking free from this bondage. Healing requires both neurological rehabilitation and spiritual renewal.
4. Victims of sexual abuse face unique challenges, including spiritual oppression and difficulties forming healthy adult relationships. A safe, compassionate, and supportive Christian community is essential for their healing journey, where prayer, scripture, and truthful sharing can bring comfort and restoration.
5. Sexual bonding is both physical and spiritual. When two people unite sexually, they open themselves to each other’s spiritual influences. This can sometimes include demonic influences carried by a partner, which calls for spiritual breaking of illicit sexual bonds and a commitment to discipleship and accountability in a Christ-centered community.
