Giants in the Land

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the challenges in your life—those moments when difficulties seem like towering giants, ready to crush your spirit? Many of us recognize this feeling all too well. Whether it’s struggles within our families, pressures at work, health concerns, or doubts that assail us after making a commitment to follow Christ, these “giants” can cast long shadows over our faith and hope. Yet, the questions remain: How do we face these giants? Where do we find the strength to stand firm when everything seems to be against us? And what can the story of a young shepherd boy named David teach us about courage, faith, and victory in the face of overwhelming odds?

From Humble Beginnings to Divine Anointing

David’s story begins not in a palace, but out on the hills, tending sheep. He was the youngest son in a family that was far from perfect. Psalm 69:8 reveals the loneliness and alienation David felt: “I have become a stranger to my kindred, an alien to my mother’s children.” His family life was complicated, with older brothers who despised him and a mother who barely appears in the biblical narrative. Yet, despite these hardships, God saw in David a heart after His own.

When the prophet Samuel came to anoint the future king of Israel, David was overlooked by his family and left in the fields. God’s choice was not based on outward appearances but on the condition of the heart. 1 Samuel 16:13 tells us, “Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward.” This anointing marked the beginning of an incredible journey with God, reminding us that no matter our background or circumstances, God’s Spirit can empower us for the path ahead.

Faithfulness in the Ordinary: The Shepherd’s Training Ground

Before David faced giants, he was a shepherd boy, responsible for his father’s flock. This was no easy task. Shepherding required constant vigilance—protecting the sheep from lions and bears, battling the elements, and enduring long, lonely hours. David’s own words in 1 Samuel 17:34-36 describe how he defended the flock: “Whenever a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep… I went after it, struck it down, and rescued the sheep.”

This faithful service in a menial and difficult job was David’s preparation. It was here, in the daily struggle to protect what was entrusted to him, that David learned courage, skill, and dependence on God. His sling and stones were simple tools, but through them, God’s power was revealed. This reminds us that our everyday responsibilities and the gifts God has given us—no matter how small they seem—are vital training grounds for the battles ahead.

Facing Giants in God’s Armor: Using Our Unique Gifts

When David was called to confront Goliath, King Saul offered him his own armor. But David found it cumbersome and unfamiliar, saying, “I cannot walk with these, for I am not used to them” (1 Samuel 17:39). Instead, David chose five smooth stones and his sling, weapons he knew well.

David’s refusal to fight in another’s armor teaches a crucial lesson: God equips each of us with unique gifts and strengths suited to our calling and personality. We are not meant to imitate others but to develop and use the gifts God has given us. These gifts, nurtured faithfully, become the tools through which God works mightily. The giants we face may be daunting, but with God’s Spirit and our faithful preparation, victory is possible.

Confidence in the Lord of Hosts: The God Who Fights for Us

David’s famous declaration to Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:45 reveals the source of his courage: “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel.” The “Lord of hosts” is a powerful name for God, emphasizing His role as commander of heavenly armies and protector of His people.

Psalm 46 echoes this confidence: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble… The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress” (Psalm 46:1,7). In times of fear and uncertainty, knowing that God is present, strong, and mighty in battle offers unshakable hope. We face giants not alone, but with God as our shield and guide.

Promises of a Covenant-Keeping God

God’s faithfulness to David was sealed in a covenant, promising him an enduring kingdom and future descendants who would reign forever (2 Samuel 7:12-16). This covenant gave David assurance that no matter the immediate danger, God’s plans would prevail.

Similarly, God invites us into a personal covenant relationship, where His promises become the foundation of our faith and daily walk. Joshua 1:5-9 encourages us to be strong and courageous, assuring us that “the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” When we meditate on God’s Word and commit to following Him faithfully, He promises success and protection. Even when giants arise, the covenant-keeping God stands with us, giving us strength to persevere.

Standing Firm When Giants Fight Back

Like David, each believer can expect opposition. Jeremiah, called as a young prophet, was warned that people would fight against him. Yet God reassured Jeremiah, “They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail… for I am with you to deliver you” (Jeremiah 1:19). This same promise extends to us. After baptism or any spiritual renewal, challenges often intensify, but God’s presence ensures that these battles do not defeat us.

Psalm 124 powerfully declares, “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side… then we would have been swallowed up… Blessed be the Lord, who has not given us as prey to their teeth!” (Psalm 124:1-6). When we trust God and hand over our battles to Him, He fights for us. We can face life’s giants with confidence, knowing that victory belongs to the Lord.

A Hopeful Invitation: Trust God and Step into Your Finest Hour

The story of David reminds us that giants will come, but God is greater. You don’t have to face your challenges alone or in borrowed armor. God has given you unique gifts and the Holy Spirit’s power to stand firm. He is your ever-present help, your refuge, your mighty warrior, and your covenant-keeping God.

If you have recently committed your life to Christ or feel overwhelmed by the giants in your life, take heart. Ask God to help you identify and develop the gifts He has given you. Seek His strength daily through His Word and prayer. Remember that the battle belongs to God. He promises to be with you, to fight for you, and to deliver you.

Will you trust the Lord of hosts today? Will you step out in faith, confident that He who has called you is faithful to complete His work in you? Just as David faced Goliath with courage and victory, so can you face your giants and overcome, because God is greater than any challenge you will encounter.

“He that is with us is greater than all those who are against us. If God be for you, who can be against you?”

Take hold of this promise. Walk in the power of the Holy Spirit. Face the giants in your life knowing that the Lord of hosts is fighting for you—and victory is assured.
