Session 1: The Story and Its Context (Judges 19:1–30)

“I came to Gibeah that belongs to Benjamin, I and my concubine, to spend the night. The men of Gibeah rose against me and surrounded the house at night. They intended to kill me and raped my concubine until she died.” (Judges 19:12-25, paraphrased)

The story of the concubine’s brutal abuse and death in Gibeah is one of the darkest narratives in Scripture, often avoided because of its graphic and upsetting details. Yet, it holds profound spiritual lessons, especially about the consequences of moral decay within God’s people. The levite’s partial and edited recounting of events shows how incomplete truths and failure to take responsibility can lead to greater tragedy. His silence on his own delayed actions and lack of care for the concubine reflects a wider moral failure.
The initial crime wasn’t isolated; it escalated into a national crisis involving all Israel. The levite’s dismemberment and distribution of the concubine’s body parts to the twelve tribes symbolized the grievous breach in the unity and moral fiber of the nation. Session 2: The Cycle of Israel’s Moral Decline (Judges Overview and Judges 19-21)

The spiritual decline is marked by how women are treated, serving as a barometer for the nation’s morality. Session 3: God’s Judgment vs. Human Judgment (Genesis 18-19 and Judges 19-21)

By comparing the story of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18-19) with the story of the concubine in Judges 19-21, we see a stark contrast between God’s judgment and human judgment. God initiates judgment only after careful investigation and verification of facts, showing His commitment to justice and fairness.
In Genesis, God sends angels to assess the situation in Sodom, ensuring that His judgment is based on truth. Conversely, in Judges, the tribes of Israel quickly pass judgment based on a single, incomplete testimony without hearing the other side. This leads to injustice, unnecessary bloodshed, and preservation of the wicked rather than their destruction.
God’s judgment is redemptive: He saves the righteous and punishes the wicked completely. Human judgment, as shown in Judges, is retributive and flawed, often harming the innocent and allowing the wicked to survive. The Book of Judges and the story of the concubine illustrate how societal moral breakdown leads to chaos and suffering. Yet, even in such times, individuals can choose faithfulness to God. The examples of Othniel, Deborah, Ruth, and Boaz show that it is possible to live a holy life amid widespread sin and violence.
