1. The Bible teaches that life is a unique combination of the dust of the earth and the breath of life from God. This union creates a living being, or “nephesh chayyim” in Hebrew, which means a living soul. This counters the idea that humans possess an immortal soul independent of the body; rather, life itself is a gift from God.
2. Adam and Eve were created immortal, but their immortality was conditional on obedience to God’s command. They were free to eat from every tree except the tree of knowledge of good and evil, with the warning that eating from it would bring death (Genesis 2:15-17). This shows that immortality was not inherent but dependent on God’s will.
3. The serpent’s lie to Eve, “You will not die,” contradicts God’s truth and remains the oldest and most widespread deception. Many religions promote ideas of an immortal soul or reincarnation, but the Bible clearly states that death is the consequence of sin, and the soul that sins will die (Ezekiel 18:20).

This truth protects us from the deception of spiritualism and mediumship, where evil spirits impersonate the dead to deceive the living.
