Day 1: God’s Moral Diagnosis and the Need for Change

You see the harsh realities of life laid bare—injuries from accidents, wounds from violence, people suffering from the consequences of poor choices. This is a vivid picture of our society’s health. Many would agree: our world is not well. We live amid confusion and moral chaos. Everywhere we turn, messages of “follow your heart” and “do whatever you want” bombard us, especially our children. But what happens when we follow our own hearts without guidance? How healthy is a society where no one will say what is right or wrong?

Today’s Truth

God’s diagnosis is clear: trusting solely in our own hearts is foolishness. Solomon’s wisdom in Proverbs 28:26 warns us that leaning on our own understanding leads to trouble. The prophet Hosea adds that sowing the wind of poor choices and immorality brings a whirlwind of consequences—family breakdown, violence, and social decay. The moral compass of society is failing, and the results are evident all around us. Without a firm foundation of moral values, society degrades and collapses. But there is hope. God has not left us without direction. He has made His law known through the Ten Commandments—His promises for a flourishing life and society.

These commandments, or promises, protect us from the destructive consequences of sin and guide us toward living in harmony with God and one another. They call us to worship the one true God, reject idolatry, speak truthfully, honor family relationships, and live lives free from violence and immorality. If society embraced these promises, the blessings would be profound. Yet, these laws are not just external rules; they are meant to transform our hearts and bring true healing to our broken world.

Day 2: The Old Covenant and Its Limitations

Think back to a time when you promised to do something, but only outwardly. Maybe you agreed to a chore or a responsibility without really meaning it in your heart. You might have done what was expected on the surface but without true change inside. This is how the people of Israel first responded to God’s covenant—they promised obedience with their lips but not their hearts. What happens when we rely solely on external obedience? The promise fails.

God’s covenant with Israel at Mount Sinai was centered on the Ten Commandments, but it failed because the people treated it as a matter of external compliance rather than inner transformation. Hebrews 8 explains that God found fault with this old covenant because the people did not remain faithful. Jesus revealed the deeper meaning of the law in the Sermon on the Mount, showing that God desires a change of heart, not just outward obedience. For example, He taught that looking at someone with lust is already committing adultery in the heart. This shows that God’s law is about holiness within, not just behavior without.

Day 3: The Promises of the New Covenant

The new covenant God promises in Hebrews 8 has four key promises. First, He will write His laws on our hearts, transforming us to desire to do His will. Third, the new covenant results in a shared knowledge of God that spreads from the least to the greatest, inspiring us to witness and share His love with others. Just as a bride proudly shows her engagement ring, so we naturally want to proclaim our covenant relationship with God.

Lastly, God promises mercy and forgiveness—He will remember our sins no more. This justification declares us righteous through Christ’s sacrifice, freeing us from the burden of guilt and shame. Entering this covenant is not just a legal agreement but a life-changing experience where Jesus lives in us, and we live by faith in Him.

We enter this covenant in baptism and renew it through the Lord’s Supper, symbolizing Christ’s body broken for us and His blood shed for the remission of sins. This covenant is the foundation of our spiritual life and community.

Day 4: The Sabbath – The Sign of the Covenant

Now imagine a sacred pause, a holy moment in time set aside just for rest, reflection, and connection with God and loved ones. This is the Sabbath, God’s gift to us. Have you ever experienced the deep peace that comes from slowing down and honoring this holy time?

The Sabbath is more than a day off; it is the sign of God’s covenant with His people. It is a weekly memorial of creation and a celebration of salvation. Just as God rested on the seventh day after creating the world, He invites us to rest and delight in His presence. The Sabbath reminds us that we are created beings, accountable to our Creator, and that all good gifts come from Him.

In addition to being a creation memorial, the Sabbath also recalls our deliverance from slavery to sin. It is a celebration of God’s saving grace, a weekly wedding anniversary with our Creator. When we honor the Sabbath, we affirm our identity as God’s people, set apart and sanctified by His love. This holy time reorients us, refreshing our spirits and strengthening our relationships with God and each other.

Jesus Himself kept the Sabbath, healed on the Sabbath, and declared Himself Lord of the Sabbath. The Sabbath is not a Jewish institution alone; it was established at creation for all humanity. It is a universal blessing, a cathedral of time where we meet God regardless of race, status, or background.

When we keep the Sabbath, we break free from the relentless rat race and reconnect with what truly matters. It is a taste of heaven, a foretaste of the eternal rest and joy that await us.
