Heavenly Treasure: A 5-Day Devotional Guide
This devotional is based on the sermon from Matthew 6:19-21, exploring what it means to shift our focus from earthly, temporary security to eternal, heavenly investments.
Key Verse: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” – Matthew 6:19-21 (NIV)
Day 1: The Illusion of Earthly Security
Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:19-21, 25-34
Reflection: Dr. Vine began by sharing a childhood story where money was a source of both joy and pain. Our relationship with wealth is often emotionally charged because we see it as a source of security. Jesus addresses this directly, telling us not to worry about our life—what we will eat, drink, or wear. He points out that worry is a symptom of a heart that trusts in earthly treasures more than a heavenly Father.
Consider:
-
What was your first memory or lesson about money? Was it positive or negative?
-
What are the things you typically worry about? How do those worries reveal where you are placing your trust?
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I confess that I often look to my bank account, my job, or my possessions for security instead of to You. Forgive me for my anxiety and help me to rest in Your promise to provide for my daily needs. Shift my heart to trust in You alone. Amen.
Action: Identify one specific worry you have about the future. Write it down and then prayerfully release it to God, asking Him to replace your fear with faith.
Day 2: The Deceitfulness of Wealth
Scripture Reading: 1 Timothy 6:6-10, 17-19
Reflection: The sermon detailed how money systems rise and fall, are debased by governments, and ultimately fail. The “love of money” is a root of all kinds of evil because it promises what it cannot deliver: lasting security and contentment. Paul instructs those who are rich in this world not to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to be “rich in good deeds,” thus laying a firm foundation for the coming age.
Consider:
-
How have you seen the purchasing power of money change in your lifetime? How does that make you feel about your savings?
-
In what ways can the pursuit of wealth lead us away from God?
Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to the deceitfulness of wealth. Help me to see that true life does not consist in the abundance of my possessions. Free me from the desire to be rich in this world and give me a generous heart that is eager to share and do good. Amen.
Action: Review your budget or spending from the last month. What does it reveal about what you truly value? Pray for wisdom to align your finances with God’s priorities.
Day 3: Investing in Heavenly Treasure I (Your Body & Soul)
Scripture Reading: Romans 12:1-2; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
Reflection: Heavenly treasure isn’t a celestial bank account; it’s anything of eternal value. The first investment is in ourselves. We are called to offer our bodies as a “living sacrifice.” This means honoring God with our physical health, mental well-being, and moral purity. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, bought with a price. Caring for them is an act of worship and a way to store up treasure that cannot be corrupted.
Consider:
-
How can you better care for your body as the temple of the Holy Spirit? (Consider diet, exercise, rest, and what you watch or listen to).
-
What does it mean to be “transformed by the renewing of your mind”?
Prayer: God, thank You for the incredible gift of my body and mind. I surrender them to You today. Help me to make choices that honor You as my physical and spiritual act of worship. Show me how to renew my mind with Your truth. Amen.
Action: Choose one “NEW START” principle (Nutrition, Exercise, Water, Sunshine, Temperance, Air, Rest, Trust in God) to focus on improving this week as an act of worship.
Day 4: Investing in Heavenly Treasure II (God’s Word & God’s People)
Scripture Reading: Matthew 13:52; Colossians 2:2-3; 1 Thessalonians 2:19-20
Reflection: The greatest treasures are the knowledge of God and the souls of people. Jesus compared a teacher of the law to a homeowner who brings out new and old treasures. God’s Word is a treasure to be stored in our hearts (Psalm 119:11). Furthermore, the Apostle Paul said the believers he led to Christ were his “hope, joy, and crown” before Jesus. Investing in evangelism and discipleship yields eternal dividends.
Consider:
-
How are you actively storing God’s Word in your heart?
-
Who in your life can you invest in spiritually? How can you encourage them or share the hope of Christ with them?
Prayer: Lord Jesus, Your Word is a priceless treasure. Give me a hunger to know it and hide it in my heart. Break my heart for the lost and give me the courage and love to invest my time, talents, and resources in sharing the gospel. Help me to see people as You see them. Amen.
Action: Memorize one verse this week. Reach out to one person to encourage them in their faith or to ask about their spiritual journey.
Day 5: Where Your Heart Is
Scripture Reading: Matthew 6:19-21 (again); Luke 12:32-34
Reflection: We end where we began, with Jesus’s core teaching: “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” This is not a command for our heart to follow our treasure, but a diagnosis that our heart will always follow our treasure. If we invest everything in earth, our affections will be tied to a sinking ship. But if we invest in heaven, our affections, passions, and joys will increasingly align with God’s kingdom.
Consider:
-
Honestly evaluate: Where is your treasure currently? Where is your heart as a result?
-
What is one practical step you can take this month to intentionally “store up treasure in heaven”?
Prayer: Father, Your kingdom is the only eternal investment. I ask You to search my heart and show me where I need to reallocate my treasure—my time, my energy, my gifts, and my money—toward Your purposes. I want my heart to be with You. Give me the faith to seek first Your kingdom, trusting that You will provide all I need. Amen.
Action: Make a decision to give sacrificially to a gospel-centered mission or ministry. Commit to a regular, scheduled time of prayer and Bible study, treating it with the same importance as a financial investment.
