Session 1: The Trumpets and the Lord of History (Revelation 8–9)

“Then I looked and I heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, ‘Woe, woe, woe to the inhabitants of the earth because of the remaining blasts of the trumpets of the three angels who are about to sound.’” — Revelation 8:13

The final three trumpets are called “woes” and represent God’s last calls of mercy before the end of probation and the coming of the judgment. The first woe is linked to the rise of Islam (the Arab jihad), the second to the Ottoman Turkish jihad, and the third woe to events associated with the final days, including the proclamation of the everlasting gospel and the judgment of the dead.

Session 2: The First and Second Woes: The Arab and Ottoman Jihads (Revelation 9)

“The fifth angel blew his trumpet, and I saw a star that had fallen from heaven to earth… They have as king over them the angel of the bottomless pit. His name in Hebrew is Abaddon, and in Greek is Apollyon.” — Revelation 9:1, 11

The first woe is identified with the rise of Islam, the Arab jihad, starting with Muhammad’s preaching around 612 AD. This period is seen as a fulfillment of prophecy describing a dark force obscuring the gospel light, symbolized by locust-like horsemen with scorpion tails that torment but do not kill for 150 prophetic years (interpreted as 150 actual years).
The historical spread of Islam across the Middle East, North Africa, and into Europe, halted by Charles Martel at the Battle of Tours in 732, matches the imagery and time frame of this trumpet judgment. The “locusts” are interpreted as the Arab peoples, who conquered by military force rather than missionary outreach.
The second woe corresponds to the Ottoman Turkish jihad, with the Ottoman Empire’s rise beginning in 1299 and its conquest of Constantinople in 1453. This empire used gunpowder and massive cannon, represented in the prophecy by horses breathing fire, smoke, and sulfur—symbolizing the new military technology of the time.
The Ottoman Empire’s vast armies, with 200 million horsemen symbolizing countless cavalry troops, devastated Christian lands. The prophecy’s timeline from 1449 (when the last Byzantine emperor ruled by Ottoman permission) to 1840 (when European powers forced the Ottomans to retreat) fulfills the 391 years and 15 days described in Revelation 9.
The interpretation is supported by the Millerite movement’s prophetic charts and writings, which demonstrated the accuracy of prophecy to the day, strengthening faith in the divine inspiration of Scripture and the certainty of Christ’s soon return.

Session 3: The Third Woe and the Final Call (Revelation 10–11, 14)

This movement restores the roles of the Old and New Testaments as witnesses (the two olive trees and two candlesticks in Revelation 11) to proclaim the truth in the end times.
The third woe features a resurgent papacy allied with the United States seeking to impose false worship through a Sunday law. This final conflict forces believers to choose loyalty between earthly powers and God’s commandments, highlighting the significance of religious liberty and conscience.
Despite the ominous warnings, the third woe is also a time of “rapid and triumphant spread of the gospel.” Sister White emphasizes that this final call will be God’s last merciful invitation to the world before probation closes.
The contemporary world is marked by three competing forces denying religious liberty: radical Islam, a resurgent papacy, and intolerant secularism. This ideological struggle intensifies the urgency for God’s people to stand firm and proclaim the everlasting gospel with clarity and courage.
