Day 1: The Light Shines in the Darkness

Key Scripture — “Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, ‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’” (John 8:12, NKJV)

Opening Reflection

Imagine walking through a dark room at night, unable to see your hand in front of your face. Suddenly, someone lights a candle. The light pushes back the darkness, making it possible to see and move forward safely. This simple image helps us understand the profound truth Jesus shared: He is the light in a world plunged into spiritual darkness. The darkness cannot overcome the light, but it desperately tries. Have you ever felt surrounded by the darkness of fear, confusion, or hopelessness? What difference would it make to know that Jesus is present, shining His light into your life right now?

Today’s Truth

The world we live in is deeply troubled by violence, cruelty, and despair, much like the days of Noah or the Babylonian exile described in Psalm 74. Sin has darkened hearts and societies, filling “the dark places of the earth” with chaos and pain. Yet, God’s response was not to abandon us but to send His Son, Jesus, as the light of the world. This light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it. Jesus did not come to add more darkness but to dispel it with His love, truth, and grace. When we follow Him, we receive the light of life—a light that guides us, comforts us, and empowers us to stand firm amid trials. This light also calls us to purity, to remove the darkness from our own hearts and homes, so we may be beacons of hope to others.

Day 2: Called to Be the Light

Key Scripture — “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.” (Matthew 5:14-15, NKJV)

Have you ever noticed how a single candle in a dark room can transform the entire space? Even a small light shines powerfully when darkness surrounds it. Jesus calls His followers to be like that candle—a visible light shining before others. But what does that look like in everyday life? Day 3: The Cost and Joy of Mission

Key Scripture — “The love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.” (2 Corinthians 5:14-15, NKJV)

Opening Reflection

Imagine signing up for an expedition filled with hardship, danger, and sacrifice—where comfort and safety are rare and the mission may cost you dearly. Yet, thousands would volunteer because the cause is greater than personal comfort. This is the calling of a missionary, and more broadly, the calling of every believer. Mission is not always glamorous; it often involves scars—physical, emotional, and spiritual. But for those who know the love of Christ, mission is also the greatest joy, the overflow of a heart transformed by grace. Have you ever considered what sacrifices you might be willing to make to share God’s love with others?

Today’s Truth

Missionaries and frontline workers face immense challenges and dangers as they bring the gospel to unreached people groups, often in hostile environments. They carry scars because of their sacrifice, but their motivation springs from the love of God—a love so powerful it compels them to serve others despite personal cost. This love was demonstrated supremely in Jesus’ death and resurrection, which frees us from sin and empowers us to live for Him. Our mission today is to be part of this great commission—whether by going, praying, or giving—so that the gospel reaches the ends of the earth, hastening the second coming of Christ when suffering, violence, and death will end forever. This is both a solemn responsibility and a joyful privilege.

Day 4: Offerings as Acts of Worship and Faith

Key Scripture — “Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the Lord your God which He has given you.” (Deuteronomy 16:17, NKJV)

Think about giving as more than a financial transaction. Imagine it as a heart act—a way to say “Thank You” to God for His blessings. Sometimes, uncertainty about how much to give or when to give can stop us before we start. But what if God’s desire is simply for us to give according to what He has blessed us with, joyfully and voluntarily? How would your attitude toward giving change if you saw it as an expression of worship rather than an obligation?

Giving offerings is an integral part of worship, a tangible expression of our gratitude and faith in God’s provision. Unlike tithing, which has a set proportion, offerings are given freely and according to one’s ability. God does not need our money; He owns all things. Our offerings are an acknowledgment that everything we have comes from Him. The story of the widow who gave two mites reminds us that it is not the amount but the spirit of our giving that pleases God. Giving should never be coerced or done grudgingly, but with a joyful heart, recognizing the immense gift of salvation offered through Jesus. When we give with love, our offerings become memorials of our commitment and love for God’s work.

Day 5: Living as Lights in a Waiting World

Key Scripture — “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” (1 Peter 2:9, NKJV)

Opening Reflection

Picture a world eagerly waiting for dawn after a long night. The darkness is heavy, but the promise of light brings hope. We are that light today, God’s people called to shine in a world desperate for peace and truth. As we wait for Jesus’ return, how are we preparing ourselves? How do we reflect the light of Christ in our daily lives, homes, and communities? The world needs not only our prayers and offerings but our lives lived visibly for God’s glory.

Being lights in a dark world means walking daily in the truth and love of Christ, shining His light through our character, words, and actions. We are called to be a holy people, a royal priesthood, proclaiming the praises of God and living in such a way that others see and glorify Him.
