Session 1: Understanding Jesus’ Sacrificial Mission (Mark 9:30-32)

Jesus predicts His death and resurrection a second time, emphasizing that His betrayal is not just by the Jewish leaders but by all humanity. Despite following Jesus physically toward Jerusalem, the disciples are still caught up in arguing about who will be the greatest. Session 3: Unity, Kindness, and Avoiding Stumbling Blocks (Mark 9:38-50)

“If your hand causes you to stumble, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than to have two hands and to go to hell.” — Mark 9:43

💭 Teaching Summary:

John’s attempt to stop a man casting out demons because he was not part of their group reveals the disciples’ struggle with pride and exclusivity. Jesus rebukes this attitude and affirms that anyone acting in His name is a fellow worker in the kingdom. We are cautioned against becoming self-appointed gatekeepers who exclude others from God’s work.
Jesus emphasizes kindness—even small acts like giving a cup of water—will not go unrewarded. Genuine kindness within the church and towards the socially insignificant reflects the heart of God and fosters unity. This calls us to be known for acts of mercy and compassion.
Jesus then warns strongly against causing others, especially new or vulnerable believers, to stumble in their faith. Stumbling blocks can be anything that leads others into sin or discouragement. Sexual sin and abuse within the church are highlighted as grave offenses with eternal consequences. The call is for truthfulness, protection, and healing within the community.
Jesus’ stark language about cutting off a hand or tearing out an eye is understood as hyperbolic but underscores the seriousness of removing sin and scandal from our lives. The chapter closes with the metaphor of salt, symbolizing sanctification and purification.
