Session 1: The Original Purpose of Men in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:15)

Men were created for purposeful work and stewardship. God’s first instructions to Adam were to “till” (work the land) and “keep” (protect and guard) the Garden. This shows that men are called to be providers who actively engage with creation to sustain life. The Hebrew word “albad” means to work and serve, highlighting a dynamic relationship between man and the natural world, emphasizing diligence and responsibility.
Protection is a core role for men. The verb “shiaa” means to hedge about, guard, and watch, revealing that men are meant to be protectors of what God has entrusted to them. This protective role extends beyond physical safety to include spiritual and moral guardianship of their families and communities.
Men are also intended to be priests in their families. Prior to Eve’s creation, Adam was given moral accountability and a priestly role to represent God’s will and lead his household in worship. This underscores the responsibility men have to intercede and nurture spiritual life in their homes.
Men are moral beings accountable to God. The command regarding the tree of knowledge of good and evil showed Adam’s freedom and responsibility to obey God’s will. This moral accountability still applies, shaping men’s roles as ethical leaders who uphold God’s standards.

Abraham’s life exemplifies God’s original purpose for men. Despite living in a sophisticated pagan culture, Abraham was a man of faith who took his family with him on God’s call, showing leadership and responsibility toward those in his care. He balanced respect for his pagan father while moving forward in obedience.
He faithfully provided for his family even in difficult times. During famine, Abraham moved his family to Egypt to ensure their survival, demonstrating provider responsibility that sometimes requires sacrifice and risk.
Abraham was a spiritual leader who built altars and led family worship. His altars marked his commitment to worshiping Jehovah and passing faith on to his household, illustrating the priestly role that men are called to fulfill, especially in guiding the next generation.
He trained and protected his household physically. Abraham had 318 trained men ready to defend the family, exemplifying the protector role, preparing his people for the challenges ahead in a hostile environment.

Session 3: The Meaning of ‘Male’ — The One Who Remembers (Genesis 1:27)

The Hebrew word for “male” (zakar) means “the one who remembers.” This is a profound spiritual concept indicating that men are created to remember God’s law, promises, and purposes, and to pass these truths on to future generations.
Men are called to remember God’s will and to speak it forth courageously. Adam’s silence when Eve was tempted led to the fall; similarly, when good men are silent today, evil prevails. Remembering means actively declaring and upholding God’s standards.
To “remember” is to embody forgiveness and covenant faithfulness, reflecting God’s character. God remembers not our sins when we repent and keeps His covenant promises. Men, created in God’s image, are to model this forgiving and faithful nature in their relationships.
