Session 1: War in Heaven – The Origin of Evil (Revelation 12:7-9; Ezekiel 28:12-15; Isaiah 14:12-15; John 8:44)

Opening Scripture: “And war broke out in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was defeated, and there was no longer any place for them in heaven.” (Revelation 12:7-8)

The sermon begins by affirming that suffering and pain are universal human experiences; no one escapes them. The question posed is why suffering exists—is it random or is there a cause? The Bible reveals that all suffering stems from a cosmic conflict that started with a war in heaven.
The war in heaven was not a physical battle as imagined in movies like Star Wars but a conflict over truth and the character of God’s government. Satan, originally called Lucifer meaning “bearer of light,” was a perfect and beautiful angel who became proud and desired to be like God. His pride corrupted his wisdom and led to rebellion.
The prophet Isaiah describes Satan’s prideful thoughts as five “I wills”: “I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit on the mount of assembly; I will ascend to the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” These reveal Satan’s desire for self-exaltation and rejection of God’s authority.
The war ended with Satan and his angels defeated and cast out of heaven to earth. They lost their place in God’s presence and became the source of evil and suffering on earth. The apostle Jude confirms that these fallen angels are confined in moral darkness, restrained by God’s power to prevent total destruction.
The nature of Satan’s conflict with God continues today. He is described as a “roaring lion” seeking to devour people, reflecting his ongoing hostility and desire to destroy God’s creation. This spiritual battle deeply affects human lives and society.

After the war in heaven, the conflict moved to earth, specifically the Garden of Eden. God gave Adam and Eve freedom to eat from every tree except one—the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. This was a test of their loyalty and obedience to God’s authority.
Satan, in the form of a serpent, introduced doubt into Eve’s mind by questioning God’s command: “Did God really say…?” This subtle planting of doubt undermined her trust in God’s word, showing how Satan’s strategy is often not a direct attack but a seed of uncertainty.
Then Satan directly contradicted God’s warning by saying, “You will not die,” denying the truth of God’s judgment. Eve believed the lie and ate the forbidden fruit, as did Adam. This act of rebellion placed self on the throne of their hearts rather than God, and is called the Fall.
Romans 5 explains the consequences: sin entered the world through Adam’s disobedience, and death through sin, spreading to all humanity. We bear the consequences of that sin in a broken and suffering world, but we are not guilty of Adam’s sin personally.
Despite the fall, God immediately promised a Redeemer who would defeat Satan: “He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.” This is the first gospel promise, pointing to Jesus who would ultimately destroy evil and restore humanity.

Jesus began His ministry with a clear purpose: to proclaim release to captives, healing, and freedom from Satan’s power. His ministry demonstrated His authority over demons and sin, showing that He had come to reclaim those held captive by evil forces.
The temptation of Jesus in the wilderness tested His loyalty, but He resisted Satan’s lies by quoting Scripture. Jesus’ victory in this spiritual battle enabled Him to bind Satan’s power and set captives free throughout His ministry.
Jesus’ power over demons was evident in His healing miracles and exorcisms, and He never lost a battle with the forces of evil. His authority is the only true power that can break Satan’s grip on people’s lives.
Despite Satan’s attempts to destroy Jesus from birth, including King Herod’s massacre of Bethlehem’s infants, Jesus fulfilled prophecy and carried out His mission to save humanity from sin and death.

The cross is now a symbol of victory, not defeat. Though it was an instrument of torture and humiliation, it has become a powerful emblem of God’s triumph over sin, death, and Satan. The empty cross reminds us that Jesus rose victorious, conquering death itself.
At Calvary, the promise of salvation was fulfilled. Jesus’ sacrificial death was a substitutionary atonement—He took the penalty for our sins so that we might be reconciled to God. This act of love was made while we were still sinners, demonstrating the depth of God’s grace.
