Session 1: The Reality and Nature of Persecution [2 Corinthians 1:3-4]

Opening Scripture:

“Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.” (2 Corinthians 1:3-4, ESV)

💭 Teaching Summary:

Paul teaches that God is the source of all comfort, especially in times of affliction. The persecuted church has a unique relationship with God’s mercy and consolation, enabling believers to support others who suffer. This mutual comfort builds a strong community rooted in shared experience and divine grace.
Persecution is a reality for many Christians worldwide, and it is driven ultimately by Satan, not merely by human adversaries. Understanding the true enemy helps believers respond with wisdom and spiritual strength rather than bitterness or despair.
The “Free Church” in places where persecution is less overt has much to learn from those who suffer openly. It is a privilege to receive the lessons of grace and endurance from persecuted believers, preparing us spiritually for trials that may come.
Satan attacks the church in two main ways: externally and internally. External attacks come from civic rulers, religious leaders, business interests, mobs, and even family pressure. Each of these reflects a different facet of opposition to the gospel.
Developing a biblical framework for understanding persecution is essential for Christian maturity. This session begins that process by categorizing the external attacks and recognizing their modern equivalents, from ancient rulers like Pontius Pilate to contemporary authoritarian governments and hostile groups.

Session 2: External Attacks on the Church [Acts 12:1-3; Acts 16:16-40]

“About that time King Herod laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword.” (Acts 12:1-2, ESV)

Satan attacks the church externally through civic rulers who oppose Christianity because it challenges their authority and demands ultimate loyalty to God. Examples include Pontius Pilate sentencing Jesus, Herod Agrippa executing James, and Emperor Nero’s persecution of early Christians. Today’s counterparts include authoritarian leaders who restrict or punish Christian practices.
Religious leaders can be powerful opponents of the gospel. In Jesus’s time, the Jewish priestly class vehemently opposed Him and His followers, even orchestrating His crucifixion. The early church suffered persecution at the hands of religious authorities who feared losing control and influence. Modern examples include clerics who incite hatred or violence against Christians.
Business leaders may oppose Christianity when it threatens their economic interests. The Apostle Paul’s ministry in Ephesus illustrates this, where local craftsmen lost income as converts abandoned pagan idols. Today, economic pressures or sanctions may be used to marginalize Christians or churches.
Mobs represent another form of external attack. When rulers, religious leaders, or businesses cannot or will not act, angry crowds may be stirred up to persecute Christians. The New Testament records several instances of mob violence, and modern “cancel culture” or physical attacks continue this pattern.
Family pressure is a deeply personal and painful source of persecution. Jesus warned that following Him may divide families, and the Bible recounts believers suffering from rejection, abuse, or worse by their own relatives. This underlines the cost of discipleship and the radical loyalty required to follow Christ.

Session 3: Internal Attacks on the Church [Proverbs 6:17; 1 Timothy 3:1-7; Psalm 51]

Opening Scripture:

“There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes…” (Proverbs 6:16-17, ESV)

💭 Teaching Summary:

Besides external opposition, Satan attacks the church from within through pride. Pride is the root of Satan’s original fall and remains a subtle but destructive force in believers’ hearts. It can manifest as self-exaltation, resentment over leadership roles, or bitterness when others receive recognition. This internal division weakens the church’s unity and witness.
Another internal attack is through true guilt—real sin and shortcomings that Satan uses to discourage believers. This can cause despair, making Christians feel beyond God’s forgiveness. However, the gospel assures full forgiveness and cleansing for those who confess their sins, as beautifully expressed in Psalm 51.
False guilt is a destructive lie from Satan that burdens believers with doubts and accusations about things already forgiven or beyond their control. This false guilt drains spiritual energy and hinders growth, distracting from the present grace and joy offered through Christ.
Fear is another powerful internal enemy. Fear of loss, persecution, or the future can paralyze believers, preventing them from speaking boldly or living faithfully. The antidote to fear is found in praising God, trusting His sovereignty, and remembering that He values each of His children deeply, even in death.
Materialism, or the love of wealth and possessions, is a subtle but devastating internal attack. It can cause believers to rely on worldly comforts instead of God, hardening hearts and diverting allegiance away from Christ. Overcoming materialism requires faithful stewardship, generous giving, and recognizing all blessings come from God.

Session 4: The Process and Theology of Persecution [Johan Candlin’s Stages; Matthew 5:10-12]

“Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account.” (Matthew 5:10-11, ESV)

Persecution often follows a predictable pattern: disinformation, discrimination, and then active persecution. Disinformation spreads falsehoods about Christians, poisoning public opinion and isolating believers. Discrimination relegates Christians to second-class status, limiting their rights and opportunities. Finally, open persecution arises, with social and legal protections withdrawn.
Jesus’s teaching in the Beatitudes highlights that persecution is a mark of righteousness and belonging to the kingdom of heaven. Christians are not persecuted for arbitrary reasons but because they live according to Jesus’s teachings, embodying His justice, love, and truth in a fallen world.
Persecution is not a sign of failure but an invitation to rejoice, as it connects believers to the prophets and faithful who have gone before. It is a refining fire that reveals and strengthens character, preparing Christians for eternal reward.
Jesus encourages His followers not to worry about what to say when persecuted because the Spirit will give them words. This assurance points to God’s ongoing presence and empowerment, even in the darkest times.
Building a life on the teachings of Jesus is the foundation for enduring persecution. Like the wise man who builds on the rock, those who live out Jesus’s teachings will stand firm when storms come, remaining lights in a dark world.

Session 5: Living as Salt and Light Amid Persecution [Matthew 5:13-16]

Opening Scripture:

“You are the salt of the earth… You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house.” (Matthew 5:13-15, ESV)

💭 Teaching Summary:

Jesus calls His followers to be “salt” and “light” in the world. Salt preserves and purifies, while light dispels darkness. Even when surrounded by the darkness of persecution and evil, believers’ witness shines brighter and becomes more visible and attractive to others.
The transition from the Beatitudes about persecution directly into the salt and light metaphor shows that suffering for Christ is not the end but the context in which Christians truly fulfill their mission. Persecution reveals and refines our witness, enabling us to influence the world for good.
Character is formed not during crises but in the daily decisions and practices of obedience to Jesus’s teachings. Preparing for persecution means cultivating godly character now, through consistent faithfulness in small things.
Living as salt and light requires courage and intentionality. It means making godly and God-fearing decisions daily that reflect Jesus’s love and truth to those around us, whether or not we currently face overt persecution.
The hope of Christians is anchored in the coming Savior who will end all evil and wipe away every tear. Until then, believers remain lights in a dark world, pointing others toward Jesus through their lives and testimonies.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your Word and the example of Jesus Christ who endured persecution for our sake. Teach us humility to overcome pride, courage to face fear, and joy to share the comfort You provide. May we be faithful witnesses as salt and light in a dark world, pointing others to Your grace and truth.
