Blog: “The Man Worth Saving – Crossing Barriers for the Lost”
Scripture Focus: Mark 4:35–5:20
Introduction
Good morning, brothers and sisters! Today, we reflect on a powerful story from the Gospel of Mark—Jesus calming the storm and healing the demon-possessed man in the region of the Gerasenes. This passage teaches us about the lengths God will go to save a single soul, the spiritual battles we face, and our call to share His goodness with others.
1. The Storm Was More Than a Storm (Mark 4:35-41)
Jesus and His disciples set sail across the Sea of Galilee after a long day of ministry. Suddenly, a violent storm arises, threatening to sink their boat. The disciples, seasoned fishermen, panic—but Jesus sleeps peacefully. When they wake Him, He rebukes the wind and says, “Peace, be still!”
But this was no ordinary storm.
-
The Greek word for “rebuke” is used when confronting demonic forces (e.g., Mark 1:25, 9:25).
-
Jesus wasn’t speaking to the weather—He was commanding a spiritual force resisting His mission.
Lesson: Before Jesus could save the demon-possessed man, Satan tried to stop Him. Similarly, when we step out in faith—whether in evangelism, personal ministry, or even daily obedience—we face opposition. But Jesus has authority over every storm!
2. The Man No One Could Help (Mark 5:1-5)
On the other side of the lake, Jesus encounters a man tormented by demons:
-
Living among tombs, naked, self-harming, uncontrollable.
-
Society had given up on him—chained, isolated, hopeless.
This is what Satan wants for humanity: brokenness, bondage, and despair.
Yet Jesus crossed multiple barriers to reach him:
-
Cultural barriers (Jewish vs. Gentile territory).
-
Religious barriers (tombs = unclean).
-
Social barriers (rejected by his community).
Lesson: No one is beyond Christ’s reach. No sin, shame, or past is too great for His redemption.
3. The Cost of Salvation (Mark 5:6-17)
The demons beg Jesus not to send them away but to enter a herd of pigs. Jesus permits it—and 2,000 pigs rush into the sea and drown.
Why would Jesus allow this economic disaster?
-
To show that one soul is worth more than all the world’s wealth.
-
To expose the townspeople’s priorities—they cared more about pigs than people.
Lesson: What do we value more—our comfort or the salvation of others?
4. The Mission of the Redeemed (Mark 5:18-20)
The healed man begs to follow Jesus, but instead, Jesus tells him:
“Go home to your friends and tell them how much the Lord has done for you.”
This is evangelism in its simplest form:
-
Not theological debates, but a personal testimony.
-
Not forced arguments, but a story of transformation.
Lesson: We don’t need perfect theology to share Jesus—we just need to share what He has done for us.
Conclusion: Will You Be a Witness?
Jesus still crosses barriers to save the lost—and He calls us to do the same.
Three Challenges for This Week:
-
Prepare your testimony (Before Christ → How you met Him → What He’s done).
-
Pray for opportunities to share it.
-
Choose people over “pigs”—invest in eternal things, not just temporary comforts.
The world may reject Jesus, but He leaves behind witnesses—us. Will you tell someone what He has done for you?
Prayer:
Lord, thank You for saving us. Give us courage to cross barriers, face storms, and testify of Your goodness. Bring divine appointments this week, and let Your love shine through us. Amen.
Discussion Questions:
-
What “storms” have you faced when stepping out in faith?
-
Who in your life seems “too far gone” for God to save?
-
How can you share your testimony this week?
“Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)
