Three Generations Blog : Are You Lost in Despair, the Church, or Wonder?

Scripture: 2 Timothy 3:1-5, Revelation 14:1-5

We are living in a time of profound confusion. Everywhere we look, from the news cycles to our own neighborhoods, we see a culture fragmenting, a society searching for meaning in all the wrong places. As we wait for the coming of Jesus, a critical question emerges: Which path are we on?

In this sermon, we explore the three spiritual generations, or pathways, that define our age. This is not about physical age, but about the condition of our hearts and our ultimate destination.

Generation One: Lost in Despair

Look at the world around us, particularly the younger generation. We see a “culture of despair” and a “philosophy of death.” Why? The root is Postmodernism, a worldview that teaches:

  • There is no objective truth or meaning.

  • Everything is a cultural construct, including morality.

  • Identity is found in group affiliation (identity politics), not in individual character.

This philosophy of “nothing matters” leads to nihilism—the belief that life is pointless. When nothing has inherent purpose, people desperately create their own meaning through ideologies, social movements, or, most profoundly, through their sexual and gender identity. This is why we see a “smorgasbord” of identities; when the most intimate act has no greater purpose, it becomes the central focus of one’s being.

This despair is the anthem of our age. The song “The Show Must Go On” by Queen, written by a dying Freddie Mercury, captures this tragedy perfectly:

“Empty spaces, what are we living for?… Does anybody know what we are looking for?… Inside my heart is breaking… I’m aching to be free.”

This is the cry of a generation born into a world that celebrates nothing. Yet, here is the profound point of agreement: Without God, humanity truly has no meaning. The world has arrived at a biblical conclusion but offers a hopeless solution. We all yearn to matter, to be known, and to love. This generation is lost, not because they are evil, but because they have been fed a philosophy of despair.

Generation Two: Lost in the Church

This is perhaps the most sobering path. It is possible to be physically inside the church but spiritually lost. The Apostle Paul, writing from prison just before his death, gives a chilling description of the “last days” within the church (2 Timothy 3:1-5).

He says these will be “distressing times,” using a word that implies a demonic fierceness. He then provides a devastating list of characteristics, framed by a central problem: misplaced love.

They are:

  • Lovers of themselves

  • Lovers of money

  • Lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God

When self is on the throne, everything else becomes corrupted. This self-love leads to boastfulness, pride, and ingratitude. It destroys family relationships, leading to disobedience, a lack of natural affection, and an unwillingness to reason. It fosters a society within the church where people are slanderous, without self-control, and treacherous.

Paul concludes that these people “will hold to a form of godliness but deny its power.” (2 Timothy 3:5). This is the essence of being lost in the church:

  • Legalism: Having the outward form of religion without the inner transformation.

  • Sentimentalism: Having inner feelings without the outward practice of faith.

True religion is both form and power. It’s a transformed heart that leads to transformed actions, especially in how we treat the “least of these”—the widows, the orphans, the voiceless. We must look in the mirror of God’s Word and ask: Am I a lover of self, money, and pleasure, or a lover of God?

Generation Three: Lost in Wonder

This is the path of hope, the calling for every true believer. It is exemplified by the 144,000 described in Revelation 14:1-5. These are not a literal count of Jews, but a symbolic representation of God’s faithful end-time people who stand victorious with the Lamb on Mount Zion.

What characterizes this generation?

  1. They Bear God’s Name: They have the Father’s name written on their foreheads. Their identity is found solely in belonging to God, and their characters perfectly reflect the character of Christ.

  2. They Sing a New Song: This is a song of unique experience. Like soldiers who have survived a terrible battle together, they share a bond and a testimony that only those who have endured the final crisis with Christ can understand. They have survived the mark of the beast, economic persecution, and the hatred of the world.

  3. They are Spiritually Pure: They have “not defiled themselves with women,” meaning they have remained separate from the false religious system of Babylon (the Papacy and its apostate daughters). They refuse ecumenical compromises and alliances with worldly powers that oppose God’s law.

  4. They Follow the Lamb Wherever He Goes: Their loyalty is not to a political party, a nation, or a social movement. It is to Christ alone. They listen for His voice in daily devotion and Scripture, and they obey—wherever that leads.

This path is not a comfortable one. It means standing for truth when the heavens seem to fall. It means being hated for Christ’s name. It means riding out the “rough roller coaster” of the time of trouble. But we can endure it, because we know it has a glorious end. We strive for this, not in our own strength, but “with all the power that God has given us.”

Your Choice Today

The three generations stand before us:

  • Lost in Despair: Embracing the world’s meaninglessness. (Eternal Death)

  • Lost in the Church: Settling for empty religion. (Eternal Loss)

  • Lost in Wonder: Being so captivated by Christ that you follow Him anywhere. (Eternal Life)

The call is to strive, with all God’s power, to be among those who are lost in wonder, love, and worship of the Lamb. Choose today to be a true disciple. Invest in your relationship with Christ. Study His Word. Let the Holy Spirit transform you from the inside out.

Choose life. Choose eternal life. Strive to be among those who are lost in wonder.
