Session 1: The Origin of Religious Apostasy and Its Effects [Acts 20:29-30; 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4]

“For I know this, that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from among yourselves men will rise up, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves.” (Acts 20:29-30, NKJV)

Religious apostasy began within the early Christian church, as foretold by the Apostle Paul. Wolves—false teachers—would arise not only from outside but from within the church itself, leading believers away from the pure gospel. This internal corruption became the root of spiritual darkness and religious tyranny.
The concept that scripture was a closed book to ordinary people, understood only by trained clergy, helped eclipse religious liberty. The idea that the church’s teaching authority was above Scripture reversed the original apostolic model where the church submitted to God’s Word, not the other way around.
Key corruptions included the introduction of rituals like the mass, which replaced the biblical priesthood with a sacrificing pagan-style priesthood. This ritualism demanded blind faith in doctrines such as transubstantiation, suspending critical thinking and opening the door to superstition.
The doctrine of salvation by grace plus works led to coercion. If good works were necessary for salvation, then those in religious power could justify forcing people to perform certain acts, destroying freedom of conscience and religious liberty.
The merging of church and state, especially with the doctrine of the divine right of kings, created a perfect system of religious tyranny. Popes claimed authority to depose kings and to be above all earthly rulers, making any challenge to their power a heresy punishable by death. This system led to centuries of persecution and suffering for those who treasured the pure gospel.

John Wycliffe, born in 1320 during the height of papal power, courageously challenged the oppressive religious system. A brilliant scholar at Oxford, he rediscovered the biblical gospel of salvation by grace alone, not by works or indulgences, which undergirded the corrupt papal system.
Wycliffe opposed the doctrine that priests controlled the keys to heaven, exposing the blasphemy of demanding money for forgiveness. He boldly questioned whether forgiveness came from friars or from Jesus Christ, redirecting faith back to Scripture and Christ alone.
Understanding the Bible was central to true faith, so Wycliffe translated the Latin Bible into English, envisioning a time when even a plowboy could know Scripture better than the pope. This was revolutionary, as Bibles were chained and inaccessible to common people.
Wycliffe’s challenge to papal authority influenced English politics, as parliamentarians rejected the pope’s claim over the English crown. Justification is God’s declaration that the repentant sinner is righteous and innocent in His sight. It is the opposite of condemnation and is freely given through faith in Christ’s redemption. This right standing with God is both an initial act and an ongoing experience.
Sanctification is the process by which God sets us apart as His holy people—saints—called for a special purpose. Even if we don’t always feel holy, God considers us saints through faith, calling us to be ministers of reconciliation in a fallen world.
