Session 1: The Problem of Darkness and Violence [Psalm 74:1-12, Genesis 6:11-13]

From the time of the Babylonian exile, God’s people recognized the devastating effects of sin and violence in the world. The psalmist mourns the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, expressing a deep sense of abandonment and despair. This historical moment reveals how the absence of God’s presence leads to widespread cruelty and suffering.
Genesis 6 describes a similar condition before the Flood, where the earth was filled with violence, prompting God to cleanse the world. This theme of pervasive violence and brokenness is not limited to ancient times but continues in our modern world, marked by conflict, injustice, and human suffering.
The psalmist’s plea for God to remember His covenant highlights the importance of God’s presence and law as a remedy for violence. Without God, humanity’s natural bent is toward cruelty and domination, leading to broken relationships at every level — personal, communal, and national.

In response to a world filled with darkness and violence, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, as the Light of the world. This light does not merely illuminate but dispels darkness completely. The gospel brings hope and healing where despair once reigned.
John’s Gospel emphasizes that the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. This portrays an ongoing conflict between good and evil, but the power of Christ’s light is victorious and enduring.
Light and darkness cannot coexist. Just as a candle’s light becomes more visible in the dark, the presence of Jesus shines most powerfully in a world overshadowed by sin. This truth challenges us to accept Him and allow His light to transform our lives.

The life of missions often involves hardship, sacrifice, and suffering, much like the Apostle Paul’s description of his ministry. The journey to proclaim the gospel is filled with dangers, opposition, and personal cost, but these trials are embraced for the sake of Christ’s love.
The present age, like the days of Noah, is marked by violence and spiritual darkness. Missionaries face these realities daily as they take the gospel to unreached and often hostile regions, demonstrating courage and faithfulness.
Despite the risks, missionaries and gospel workers are compelled by the love of God. Their service is not motivated by romance or personal gain but by a deep conviction of God’s love and the urgency to hasten Christ’s return through spreading the gospel.
Mission is a cosmic endeavor. Every soul brought to Christ brings joy to heaven and defeats the forces of darkness. The work of sharing the gospel has eternal significance and is supported by the prayers and partnership of the whole church.

Giving is not about the amount but the heart. The poor widow’s offering, though small, was precious because it came from sincere faith and love. God values joyful and willing hearts more than the size of the gift.
Giving is an act of worship and recognition that all we have belongs to God. It is a voluntary, planned, and proportional response to His grace, not a means to earn favor or manipulate God.
