Day 1: Recognizing Our Time

Imagine waking up one morning with a sudden sharp pain in your heel. You wonder, “What is this? What is happening to me?” At forty years old, the signs of aging and change become undeniable. The doctor’s words echo, “You have reached a certain age.” This phrase carries the weight of reality—time is moving forward, and life is shifting in ways we cannot ignore.

In a similar way, the world around us is reaching a certain age. Empires rise and fall; civilizations flourish then fade. We are living in a pivotal era, the biblical “time of the end.” Do we recognize the times in which we live, or are we as surprised as the man waking to heel pain, unaware of the signs all around us?

Today’s Truth:

Dr. Vine walks us through the history of empires—from the Neo-Assyrian and Persian Empires to the Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Ottomans, and finally the British and American Empires. Each empire has its lifespan, roughly ten generations, marked by stages of rise, conquest, commerce, affluence, intellect, and eventual decline. Despite advances in technology or changes in culture, the pattern repeats: empires erupt with fierce bravery, expand, flourish, then decay due to internal corruption, division, and moral decline.

Day 2: The Stages of an Empire — And Our Spiritual Journey

Think about a tree that begins as a small seed, bursts forth in growth, bears fruit, and eventually withers. Just as nature moves in seasons, so do nations and empires. They erupt with energy and bravery, expand their borders, foster commerce, and reach a peak of affluence and intellect. But inevitably, they enter seasons of decline and decay.

Have you noticed seasons in your own life? Times of excitement and growth, times of comfort and success, and perhaps times of struggle and decline? Understanding these natural rhythms can help us navigate our spiritual journey with greater wisdom.

Today’s Truth:

Dr. Vine describes the specific stages in the lifespan of empires: the age of outburst, conquest, commerce, affluence, intellect, and decline. The early stages are marked by courage and initiative, young men motivated by glory and honor. But as wealth multiplies, priorities shift toward comfort, indulgence, and personal gain. Social divisions deepen, public morality collapses, and pessimism takes hold.

This pattern is not just political or economic; it reflects spiritual realities. When a people forget God and turn to selfishness, moral decay follows. Yet, history also shows that during times of decline, God raises faithful leaders who call the people back to righteousness—Amos, Augustine, Patrick, Wesley, and others.

We see this pattern today. The world is in an age of decline, with moral confusion, division, and despair increasing. But God calls us to be those faithful witnesses who stand firm, shining His light in the darkness.

Day 3: America and the Time of the End

Opening Reflection:

Imagine standing at a crossroads where every path leads somewhere new and uncertain. That is where many feel our nation stands today. Once a beacon of freedom and opportunity, America now faces deep divisions, moral challenges, and the erosion of foundational values.

What does it mean for us as individuals and as believers to live in a society facing such upheaval? How do we respond when the very things we once trusted seem to be changing before our eyes?

Today’s Truth:

Dr. Vine outlines the stages of the American Empire with clarity: from the age of pioneers, conquest, commerce, to affluence and intellect, and now approaching the age of decadence and decline. We see the rise of social polarization, moral confusion, loss of religious tolerance, and increasing government control that challenge liberty and conscience.

He warns that no empire has ever reversed its decline merely by political means; true revival requires a change of heart and spiritual awakening. Yet, as Seventh-day Adventists, we have the hope of the coming Kingdom of God, a Kingdom built on justice and righteousness. We are called to prepare ourselves and be faithful witnesses amid these trials, shining brightly as a city on a hill.

Have you ever been offered a task that feels overwhelming, yet you sense deep in your heart that it is exactly what you are meant to do? The call to serve God often comes with challenges and sacrifices, but also with the promise of purpose and eternal significance.

In a world growing darker and more divided, each of us faces the question: Will I respond to God’s call? Will I say, “Here am I, Lord, send me”?

Today’s Truth:

The time has come for God’s people to rise courageously and boldly. Opening Reflection:

Imagine the quiet strength of a man like Polycarp, the early Christian martyr, standing before his enemies with unwavering faith. When asked to renounce his King, he declared, “I have served Him for eighty-six years; why should I deny Him now?” His name echoes through history as a testimony of faith.

We too have been handpicked by God for this time. Before we were born, He knew us, set us apart, and appointed us for His service. This truth is both humbling and empowering. We are not accidental bystanders but chosen participants in God’s grand plan.

Today’s Truth:

Dr. Vine emphasizes that we were born for this time. God’s providence has placed us in this era of history to be His witnesses. The challenges are great, but so is the promise: those who stand faithful will experience the joy of the final victory, the resurrection, and eternal life with God in the new earth.

Our primary loyalty is to God’s Kingdom. While earthly kingdoms fade, the Kingdom of God is eternal and unshakable.
