Session 1: Anointed for a Journey (1 Samuel 16:13-14; Psalm 69:8)

Opening Scripture: “Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the Lord troubled him.” (1 Samuel 16:13-14)

Teaching Summary:

1. David’s anointing marks the beginning of a divine adventure. Though he was a young shepherd boy, anointed by Samuel, the Spirit of God came upon him mightily—signifying God’s call and empowerment for a unique purpose. This was not the start of an easy life, but a sacred journey in God’s service.
2. David came from a difficult family background. Psalm 69:8 reveals his sense of alienation: “I have become a stranger to my kindred, an alien to my mother’s children.” David was likely a stepbrother to his older siblings, which caused tension and rejection. This reminds us that God’s chosen ones often come from imperfect, even painful family situations.
3. Despite being overlooked and misunderstood, David remained faithful. His brothers despised him, yet he did not retaliate with anger but responded with peace. This shows the importance of grace and patience in difficult relationships.
4. The departure of the Holy Spirit from Saul and the arrival of an evil spirit illustrate a spiritual transition. While David was empowered, Saul was weakening. This contrast reminds us that God’s Spirit chooses to empower those who follow His heart, even if their path is challenging.

Session 2: Faithfulness in the Ordinary (1 Samuel 17:34-40)

Opening Scripture: “David said to Saul, ‘Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, I went after it, struck it, and rescued the sheep from its mouth. If it turned on me, I caught it by the jaw, struck it, and killed it.’” (1 Samuel 17:34-35)

Teaching Summary:

1. David’s shepherd work was tough and demanding. He spent days and nights protecting the sheep, constantly alert to danger. This job required courage, endurance, and skill—qualities that prepared him for the giant battle ahead. God honors faithfulness in seemingly small tasks as preparation for greater challenges.
2. David’s experience with lions and bears wasn’t just physical; it was a spiritual metaphor. He fought fiercely for what was entrusted to him, never giving up a lamb to the enemy. This reflects how Jesus, the Son of David, seeks and saves His lost sheep, battling for each of His children.
3. David’s refusal to fight in Saul’s armor teaches us about authenticity and using our God-given gifts. The armor was heavy and unfamiliar, so David chose his slingshot and stones—tools he knew well. Likewise, God equips each of us uniquely; we must discover and develop our own spiritual gifts rather than trying to imitate others.
4. Faithfulness in the ordinary builds readiness for extraordinary moments. David’s consistent care of the flock meant he was ready when God called him to confront the giant Goliath. This encourages us to be diligent and faithful in everyday duties, trusting God will prepare us for His purposes.

Opening Scripture: “You come to me with a sword and a spear and a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand.” (1 Samuel 17:45-46)

Teaching Summary:

1. Goliath was a literal giant, heavily armored and intimidating—a formidable enemy. Yet David faced him with boldness, trusting not in physical weapons but in the power of God. This reminds us that the giants in our lives may seem overwhelming, but God’s strength is greater than any obstacle.
2. David declared he was fighting “in the name of the Lord of hosts,” a name that reveals God as a mighty warrior and protector who leads heavenly armies. Psalm 46 confirms this truth: God is “a very present help in trouble,” and therefore, we need not fear, even when the earth shakes and storms rage around us.
3. David’s confidence was rooted in the character of God as refuge and strength. He knew God’s presence was constant, and that gave him courage to face danger. This is a powerful example for us to trust God’s presence in our battles, rather than relying solely on our own strength.
4. The story illustrates that victory comes from God, not human might. David’s stones and sling were instruments, but the battle belonged to the Lord. When we face our personal giants—illness, broken relationships, financial struggles—we can stand firm knowing God fights for us.

Session 4: Trusting God’s Covenant Promises (2 Samuel 7:8-16; Joshua 1:2-9; Psalm 124)

Opening Scripture: “I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel. Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me; your throne shall be established forever.” (2 Samuel 7:8,16)

Teaching Summary:

1. God made a covenant with David, promising to establish his kingdom forever. This covenant was not just for David but pointed forward to Jesus, the Son of David, who reigns eternally. Knowing God keeps His promises gave David confidence even when the fulfillment was still future.
2. Similarly, God made a covenant with Joshua, commanding him to be strong and courageous and promising His presence wherever Joshua went. This covenant was conditional upon obedience and meditation on God’s law, highlighting the partnership between divine faithfulness and human responsibility.
3. Psalm 124 celebrates God’s deliverance: “If it had not been the Lord who was on our side… then they would have swallowed us up alive.” This psalm reminds us that behind every victory is God’s protecting hand, especially when enemies and giants threaten to overwhelm us.
4. Entering into a personal covenant relationship with God means committing to His promises and living in obedience. When we do so, we can face giants with assurance, knowing God is our covenant-making and covenant-keeping God.

Session 5: Courage to Carry On (Jeremiah 1:4-10, 19)

Opening Scripture: “Do not say, ‘I am only a boy’; for you shall go to all to whom I send you… Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, says the Lord.” (Jeremiah 1:7-8)

Teaching Summary:

1. Jeremiah, like David, was called young and reluctant. He feared the challenges ahead, but God reassured him that He would be with him to deliver and protect. This teaches us that God equips and accompanies us even when we feel inadequate or afraid.
2. God warned Jeremiah that opposition would come, but promised that his enemies would not prevail. Similarly, new believers and all Christians will face spiritual battles and attacks, but God’s presence ensures ultimate victory.
3. This passage encourages us to stand firm in faith, knowing that God does not remove us from the fight but walks with us through it. His presence is our strength and shield during trials.
4. Like Jeremiah and David, we are called to courageous service, trusting God’s promises and power, not our own abilities. Our battles are won through faith in God’s deliverance.

Closing Prayer

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the powerful example of David, who trusted You in the face of giants. We come before You humbly, asking for the same courage, faith, and confidence to face the challenges in our lives. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, empower us to use the gifts You have given, and help us to trust in Your covenant promises. When giants threaten to overwhelm us, remind us that You are our refuge, our strength, and our ever-present help. May we walk boldly, knowing that the battle belongs to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
