5-Day Devotional Guide: God’s Call

Based on Exodus 3:1-15

Day 1: Understanding the Wilderness

Key Scripture: “Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian; and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness, and came to Horeb, the mountain of God.” — Exodus 3:1 (ESV)

Opening Reflection: Have you ever felt like you were in the wilderness, unsure of your next steps, and wondering why God seems silent? Perhaps you’re at a point where life seems monotonous, and you’re waiting for a sign or a change. Imagine Moses, once a prince of Egypt, now tending sheep in a foreign land. The wilderness can feel like a place of isolation, but it’s often where God prepares us for His call.

Consider Ida, a woman from the Philippines who faced her own wilderness. Despite societal and church pressures to forgive her husband’s grave sins and allow him back into her home, Ida stood firm, protecting her daughters. She endured disinheritance and exile, yet her faith and mission flourished in her wilderness. God often uses these times to refine us, to prepare us for the mission He has in store.

Today’s Truth: The wilderness is not a place of abandonment but a place of preparation. Moses spent 40 years as a shepherd, learning humility and patience. It’s where he encountered God in the burning bush. Much like Moses, Ida’s wilderness experience was intense, yet it was there that God clarified her mission, giving her strength to lead others to Christ despite her hardships.

God allows us to walk through the wilderness to burn away the dross of our characters, making us ready for His call. It’s in these quiet, seemingly insignificant moments that He shapes us, just as He did with Moses. Our wilderness can become the place where God speaks most profoundly.

Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank You for the wilderness experiences in our lives. Help us to see them as times of preparation and refinement. Open our hearts to hear Your voice and to trust in Your perfect timing for our lives. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Day 2: The Call at Horeb

Key Scripture: “And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed.” — Exodus 3:2 (ESV)

Opening Reflection: There are moments in our lives when the ordinary becomes extraordinary. Imagine Moses, his everyday routine of shepherding interrupted by a bush that burned but was not consumed. What captures your attention in your daily life? What might God be using to draw you closer to Him?

Consider how a simple burning bush became a pivotal moment for Moses. It was a test to see if he would notice the divine in the mundane. Our own “burning bush” moments may not be as dramatic, but they are significant in their own right. They are opportunities for us to pause, to listen, and to respond to God’s presence.

Today’s Truth: God often reveals Himself in ways we least expect. Moses’ encounter with the burning bush was not just about the miraculous sight but about God’s presence and calling. Similarly, God meets us where we are, using the ordinary to reveal His extraordinary plans.

Moses had to turn aside to see the bush, an act of willingness and curiosity. God calls us to do the same, to turn aside from our busyness and notice His work in our lives. Like Moses, we must be attentive and open to God’s voice, ready to respond when He calls.

Prayer: Lord, open my eyes to see the extraordinary in the ordinary. Help me to recognize Your presence in my life and be willing to turn aside and listen. May I be attentive to Your call and ready to follow where You lead. Amen.

Day 3: Knowing God by Name

Key Scripture: “God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And he said, ‘Say this to the people of Israel, “I AM has sent me to you.”‘” — Exodus 3:14 (ESV)

Opening Reflection: Names carry weight and meaning. When someone calls you by name, it signifies knowledge and relationship. In a world of numbers and anonymity, being known by name is powerful. Have you ever considered the significance of God’s name and what it means for Him to know you by yours?

For Moses, learning God’s name was a revelation of profound importance. It signified not just God’s identity but His character — eternal, self-existent, and faithful. When God calls us by name, He invites us into a relationship with Him, assuring us of His presence and purpose in our lives.

Today’s Truth: God’s name, “I AM,” reveals His eternal presence and sufficiency. He is not just a distant deity but a personal God who knows us intimately. As He called Moses, He calls us by name, emphasizing our worth and His commitment to us.

This personal relationship is foundational to our faith. Like Moses, we are invited to know God deeply, to trust in His character, and to rely on His promises. God’s name is a reminder of His faithfulness throughout generations, from Abraham to Moses, and now to us.

Day 4: Responding to the Call

Key Scripture: “But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh and bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?'” — Exodus 3:11 (ESV)

Opening Reflection: Have you ever felt inadequate or unworthy of a task set before you? Moses, despite his royal upbringing, questioned his ability to fulfill God’s call. It’s natural to feel overwhelmed, but these moments are where God’s strength becomes evident.

Moses’ hesitation is something many of us can relate to. We see our flaws and limitations clearer than our potential. Yet, God sees beyond our shortcomings, focusing on what we can become through His power and grace. Like Moses, we might have objections, but God’s assurance is what matters.

Today’s Truth: God calls not because of who we are but because of who He is. He equips those He calls, promising His presence and strength. Moses’ reluctance was met with God’s reassurance, “I will be with you.” This promise is for us too, empowering us to step into our calling with confidence.

Our response to God’s call requires faith and trust. We may feel unqualified, but God’s presence transforms our abilities. He uses our weaknesses to display His glory, turning our doubts into opportunities for His power to shine through.

Day 5: Walking in Faith

Key Scripture: “And Moses said, ‘Here I am.’ Then he said, ‘Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.'” — Exodus 3:4-5 (ESV)

Opening Reflection: Have you ever stood in awe, realizing you were in a sacred moment? Moses experienced this at the burning bush, a moment of reverence and readiness. God calls us to walk in faith, acknowledging His holiness and responding to His presence with humble obedience.
