Deliver Us From Evil

Have you ever felt overwhelmed by forces beyond your control? Perhaps you’ve experienced pressures, fears, or hardships that seem to come from a place deeper than just the visible world around you. Many of us recognize those moments when life’s struggles feel as if they weigh heavily on our shoulders, constricting our very breath. The question then arises: How can we find true deliverance from evil, especially the unseen evil that attacks us spiritually? This message explores the reality of spiritual warfare, the attacks of Satan, and the powerful hope we have in Jesus Christ to deliver us.

The Reality of Spiritual Attacks

In some parts of the world, spiritual forces are openly recognized and even embraced. For example, in the mountains of Palawan in the Philippines, animism and spirit worship are prevalent. Locals use drums and rituals to call upon spirits during important events like the rice harvest. I personally experienced a heavy spiritual pressure there that manifested physically—an intense constriction of my chest and difficulty breathing. It was only through crying out to Jesus that I found relief.

While such open spirit activity may seem foreign to Westerners, it’s important to realize that the spiritual battle is very real everywhere, even if less visible. Western culture, shaped by rationalism and scientific thinking, often dismisses or mocks the biblical accounts of demons and Satan. Yet paradoxically, the occult and fascination with supernatural powers are widespread in entertainment and popular culture. This disconnect highlights the subtle but powerful presence of evil influences even in societies that reject them intellectually.

Scripture’s Testimony: God’s People Are Not Immune

The Bible clearly teaches that being a child of God does not exempt us from attacks by Satan. Consider Job, whose life was devastated by Satan’s permission from God to test his faith. Job’s children died, his possessions were stolen, and he suffered painful physical afflictions. Yet Job was not possessed, but harassed — a distinction that reveals the spiritual reality behind his suffering.

The Apostle Paul also experienced intense spiritual opposition. In 2 Corinthians 12, Paul speaks of a “thorn in the flesh,” described as a messenger of Satan sent to torment him. This was allowed by God to keep Paul humble and reliant on divine grace, reminding us that even the most faithful servants face spiritual resistance.

Peter, another key disciple, was momentarily influenced by Satan when he rebuked Jesus’ prediction of suffering and death. Jesus sharply corrected Peter, showing us how dangerous it is to contradict God’s purposes—even unintentionally—and how Satan can use our own words against us. Judas Iscariot, the betrayer, was explicitly described as being possessed by a demon. His tragic example reminds us that without turning to Jesus for deliverance, spiritual bondage remains unbroken.

What Scripture Proclaims About the Spiritual Battle

The Bible reveals a cosmic conflict between good and evil, where invisible spiritual powers seek to control humanity. Ephesians 6:12 tells us that our struggle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers and authorities of darkness. Satan, once a magnificent angel who rebelled against God, now leads a host of fallen angels in opposition to God’s kingdom.

Despite this fierce warfare, God’s light continues to shine. John 1:5 declares, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” Jesus came to destroy the devil’s work (1 John 3:8) and to proclaim freedom for the captives (Luke 4:18). The ultimate victory belongs to Christ, who will cast Satan into the lake of fire at the end of time (Revelation 20:10). This assurance strengthens believers today, reminding us that no demonic force can separate us from God’s love (Romans 8:38-39).

Living in Victory: How We Respond

Knowing the spiritual realities, how then should we live? First, we are to pray daily for deliverance. The Lord’s Prayer includes the petition, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” This is not a vague request but a direct plea to be kept safe from the evil one himself. Prayer is our daily weapon and shield against satanic attacks.

Second, we are called to stand firm in the armor of God (Ephesians 6). The Apostle Paul repeatedly commands believers to stand—defensively, not offensively—against the devil’s schemes. We do not go hunting for demons, but we prepare ourselves spiritually with truth, righteousness, faith, and salvation, standing resolute when attacks come.

Third, prayer combined with fasting is a powerful response to spiritual oppression. Jesus taught that some demonic spirits can only be driven out through prayer and fasting (Matthew 17:21). Historical examples like Daniel, Esther, and Samuel demonstrate the effectiveness of this spiritual discipline in times of crisis. Fasting helps us focus wholly on God and receive His strength to overcome.

Clearing Our Lives of Hidden Strongholds

Often, the areas of our lives that offer the enemy access are the “back alleys” and “side streets” away from public view—hidden attitudes, unresolved bitterness, secret sins, or unhealthy habits. The church in Ephesus provides a model: believers confessed and renounced their occult practices, even burning their valuable magic books (Acts 19). This radical obedience led to mighty growth and victory.

In practical terms, this means examining our hearts and homes. Are there attitudes, words, or actions we hold onto that block God’s work? Do we allow television, music, or other influences that open doors to evil? One real-life example involved a brother in the church who struggled with demonic harassment linked to certain CDs he played at night. Deliverance came only after he physically removed those items and committed to prayer and fasting.

Hope for Today and Tomorrow

The biblical worldview acknowledges the brokenness of humanity and the overwhelming power of evil. Yet it also offers the best news: Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came to save us and destroy the works of the devil (1 John 3:8). He was anointed with the Holy Spirit and power to liberate those oppressed by evil (Acts 10:38). The early church demonstrated this through preaching, healing, and deliverance.

Today, Jesus remains our Savior and Deliverer. Hebrews 13:8 assures us that He is “the same yesterday, today, and forever,” and He intercedes for us continually (Hebrews 7:25). No matter the spiritual battles we face, we can stand with confidence, knowing that Christ has already won the ultimate victory.

Invitation: Trust Jesus for Deliverance

If you are burdened by unseen struggles, pressures, or spiritual attacks, be encouraged. The Lord invites you to pray daily, “Deliver us from the evil one,” trusting that He hears and will act. Examine your life honestly, remove any hidden strongholds, and commit to spiritual disciplines like prayer and fasting. Stand firm in God’s armor, confident that He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.

Jesus came to proclaim freedom to the captives and to set the oppressed free. He longs to do the same for you. Take refuge in Him today, and you will experience the peace that passes all understanding—a peace that allows you to sleep securely, even in the face of the darkest trials.
