Standing for the truth | Dr. Conrad Vine

Sermon Study Guide: “Standing for Truth”

Based on the sermon by Pastor Conrad Vine

Opening Reflection (5 minutes)

Read the introduction paragraph below, then discuss the questions with your group:

“When the spotlight of public scrutiny, persecution, or crisis falls upon you, it doesn’t create your character—it reveals it. Pastor Conrad Vine challenges us to live in such close communion with God that when that moment comes, we will be found ‘walking in the light’ with no shadows of compromise.”

Discussion Questions:

  1. Have you ever experienced a moment when your faith was under scrutiny? What did you learn about yourself?

  2. What fears arise when you consider the possibility of facing cancellation or persecution for your beliefs?

  3. Why is it crucial to prepare for crises before they happen?

Section 1: Understanding “The Church That Will Not Fall” (15 minutes)

Key Passage: Selected Messages, Book 2, p. 380 (context of the famous quote)

Core Teaching: The promise “The church may appear as about to fall, but it does not fall” refers not to the organizational structure, but to the faithful remnant who will be revealed during the final crisis.

Key Distinctions:

  • The Invisible, Faithful Church: God’s true people throughout history who love Him and keep His commandments (from Abel to today).

  • The Visible Church: The organized body containing both “wheat and tares” (faithful and unfaithful).

Group Discussion:

  1. Why do you think Adventists have often used this quote as a “comfort blanket” rather than a call to action?

  2. How does understanding this distinction change our responsibility toward addressing error within the visible church?

  3. Read 1 Kings 19:18. What does Elijah’s story teach us about God’s faithful remnant?

Section 2: The Foundation: Love (10 minutes)

Key Passage: Mark 10:17-21 (Jesus and the rich young ruler)

Core Teaching: Truth must be spoken from a foundation of genuine love. Love is not acceptance of sin but concern for eternal salvation.

Group Discussion:

  1. Why is Jesus’ interaction with the rich young ruler particularly significant in understanding how to confront error?

  2. Pastor Vine shared the analogy of “cod liver oil and orange juice.” When have you experienced “hard truth” made palatable by love?

  3. Read the quote from Desire of Ages (p. 356). What dangers arise when we prioritize “peace” over truth?

Section 3: The Basis for Unity: Scripture (10 minutes)

Key Passage: 2 John 7-11

Core Teaching: True unity can only exist on a scriptural foundation, not through compromise of truth.

Group Discussion:

  1. How does the postmodern mindset (where “your truth” and “my truth” are equally valid) challenge biblical unity?

  2. Pastor Vine shared about studying covenants with a divided church. What principles from that story can we apply when facing doctrinal disagreements?

  3. Read the quote from Great Controversy about the faithful Waldenses. When might separation become necessary for faithfulness to God?

Section 4: The Ultimate Authority: “Thus Saith the Lord” (10 minutes)

Key Passage: Acts 5:27-29; Acts 4:18-19

Core Teaching: God’s Word is the supreme authority above all human legislation, church councils, or cultural trends.

Group Discussion:

  1. What are the practical implications of the statement: “A ‘Thus saith the Lord’ is not to be set aside for a ‘Thus saith the church'”?

  2. How can we avoid the “intellectual and spiritual laziness” of waiting for official statements rather than studying Scripture for ourselves?

  3. When have you seen church councils or human authority err? How should we respond when this happens?

Section 5: The Role of Watchmen (10 minutes)

Key Passage: Jeremiah 6:16-17; Ezekiel 9:4

Core Teaching: God raises up “watchmen” to warn His people of spiritual danger. This role involves speaking truth in love, even when it’s costly.

Group Discussion:

  1. Why is the role of a “watchman” often difficult and thankless?

  2. Read the quote from Testimonies, Vol. 3 about indifference being a grievous crime. Why does God take neutrality in spiritual crises so seriously?

  3. How can someone be a “watchman” in their local context without being obnoxious or self-righteous?

Section 6: The Duty to Warn (10 minutes)

Key Passage: Acts 20:17-27 (Paul’s farewell to the Ephesian elders)

Core Teaching: Faithful ministers (including elders and deacons) must not shrink from declaring “the whole purpose of God.”

Group Discussion:

  1. What does it mean to “not shrink” from difficult truths? How does Paul’s example inspire you?

  2. How can church leaders balance grace and truth when confronting sin in the congregation?

  3. What responsibilities do lay members have in supporting their leaders when they speak difficult truths?

Section 7: The Heart Posture: Sighing and Groaning (10 minutes)

Key Passage: Ezekiel 9:3-6

Core Teaching: Even when we cannot change a situation, God notices and marks those who are genuinely grieved over sin among His people.

Group Discussion:

  1. Why is losing a sense of the seriousness of sin dangerous to our spiritual life?

  2. How can we maintain a proper “hatred” of sin without becoming judgmental or self-righteous?

  3. What practical steps can we take to cultivate a heart that “sighs and groans” over what grieves God?

Conclusion & Personal Application (10 minutes)

Pastor Vine’s Fourfold Charge:

  1. KNEEL DOWN: In prayer, confession, and seeking the Holy Spirit.

  2. STAND UP: Have courage to stand for biblical truth.

  3. SPEAK OUT: Faithfully deliver messages of warning and truth when called.

  4. TRUST GOD: Leave the consequences in His hands.

Personal Reflection Questions:

  1. Which of the four actions do you find most challenging? Why?

  2. What one practical step will you take this week to better prepare for “when the spotlight falls”?

  3. How can our group support one another in becoming people who stand for truth with love and courage?

Closing Prayer Focus:

  • Pray for courage to stand when tested

  • Pray for love that motivates truthful speech

  • Pray for discernment to recognize truth from error

  • Pray for faithfulness to Christ above all human authorities
